SERVPRO Van with "Faster to any Disaster" on the back doors as it is heading to a new job site.
Most times, it is easy to tell when you are dealing with water damage that has managed to spill into your wall. Some of the identifiable signs of wall water damage include:
Wallpaper or paint starts peeling
One of the most obvious signs that there is water behind your wall is you notice that your wallpaper or paints have started peeling. This often happens when your sheetrock has absorbed too much water. Other related signs pointing to wall water damage are flaking paints or the opening of a wallpaper at the seams.
Mold growth
Mold typically grows in areas that have excess moisture such as bathrooms, kitchens, or basements. But if you notice mold growing on walls, especially in areas distant from plumbing fixtures, there’s a chance there is moisture trapped behind your walls.
But unlike peeling or flaking of wallpapers and paint which may take days to show, mold growth takes between 24 and 48 hours to grow on your wall if there is too much moisture.
Warping
Have you noticed warping around your house? It may be time to look around the house for possible water damage to your wall. Oftentimes, warping occurs when there is too much water trapped in the sheetrock behind your walls. That said, warping on the wall is a strong indicator that there is water penetration somewhere in the house.
Musty smell
When excess water or moisture is trapped in materials such as drywall, wood, or plasterboard, it can cause moldy and musty odor. As mentioned earlier, wall cavities with trapped moisture are a breeding ground for mold, which comes with an unpleasant smell.
Therefore, if you perceive a strong odor coming from your walls, that could be a sign that water has penetrated your wall.
Visible stains around the wall
Another prominent sign of water accumulating in the drywall is noticeable staining around the wall. If the stains continue to expand, it is an indicator that there is a hidden plumbing failure in your home.

Why does drywall need to be removed and not dried after a water loss?
1/20/2024 (Permalink)
An entire room where all of the drywall had to be replaced due to water damage.
In most cases, drywall can be dried within 3 to 5 days when drying equipment is placed by a restoration company. However, in some cases, the drywall will require removal due to certain circumstances during water damage.
- If drywall is affected by "grey or black water" that carries contaminates- The drywall will have to be removed and replaced. Examples of this type of water can be found here.
- If drywall has wet insulation in the wall cavities, the drywall and insulation will have to be removed and replaced.
- If drywall has double layers, the Drywall's layers will have to be removed and replaced.
- If drywall was not professionally dried and secondary damages occurred- The drywall will have to be removed and replaced.
Suffering from a water loss is never easy, but we are here to help minimize the impact it has on your family. Give your team at SERVPRO of Corpus Cristi a call 24/7 to see how we can help mitigate any water damage your home or business may experience!

Steps to fixing a tub, sink, or toilet overflow
7/20/2022 (Permalink)
Blog summary: SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East outlines the steps to fix an overflowing tub, sink, or toilet.
It can be very frustrating to watch as your sink, tub, or toilet steadily fills to the brim and not know what to do about it.
Clogs cause most tub and sink overflows in the main plumbing drain pipe, so the water has nowhere to go and has to flow back up. Similarly, toilet overflows are often caused by a clog or a malfunction in the tank float system, which controls water flow.
Knowing what to do when you have an overflow from either of these amenities can help prevent water damage and safeguard your property. With this in mind, SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East, a leading water damage restoration company in South Side Corpus Christi, TX, has outlined the steps to fix a sink, tub, or toilet overflow.
Fixing a tub overflow
Your bathtub endures about the same amount of abuse from water, soap, hair products, and other solids making their way to the sewage system.
So the bathtub drain has the potential to clog and overflow, just like every other drainage system, which can lead to an interior flood that could result in property damage.
- The first thing you should do is to stop the flow by turning off the faucet.
- Next, you must clear the water to access the overflow drain.
Here’s how you can clear the drain:
Plunge the Tub: Get a plunger and use it on the tub to clear out any debris in the drain. The plunger's full force will be focused on the obstruction as you keep pumping it. The tub may start to drain slowly, or you might notice bubbles emerging from the drain. These are signs that the plunger is working correctly. Keep plunging until the drain is clear.
Fixing a sink overflow
- Insert a brush or pipe cleaner into the overflow hole first and push the brush in and out to eliminate as much accumulation in the hole as possible.
- Next, make a funnel out of heat-resistant silicone material and insert it into your overflow hole.
- Finally, fill the funnel with a moderate stream of boiling water. This will remove any leftover accumulation in your drain by loosening it.
How to fix a toilet overflow
- Gather your equipment and supplies. You’ll need an O-ring, an auger, and a plunger.
- Remove the tank lid from the toilet and depress the flapper to prevent additional water from entering the bowl.
- Next, shut off the water supply at the bottom and behind the toilet.
- Use the auger and plunger to generate enough suction to evacuate any debris in the toilet bowl that might still be causing a problem.
- Water still flowing? It is preferable to call a licensed plumber at this point. They'll probably use an industrial auger to clear the blockage, and the toilet may also need to be taken apart and reassembled.
What next? Get professional water damage restoration
An overflowing tub, sink, or toilet may likely result in water damage, especially if you don’t notice it on time. What you do as regards the water damage will determine whether it will just be one of those silly incidents or one that leads to massive losses.
If any part of your home, like the ceiling and belongings like a rug or furniture, is impacted by the water, then it’s essential to have it cleaned to get rid of the moisture and prevent mold formation.
This is where water damage professionals like SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East can help.

SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East explains how to prevent water damage.
5/17/2022 (Permalink)
Blog Summary: Water damages can destroy valuable property. Here are the steps you can take to prevent water damage from plumbing leaks.
Water is only supposed to be regulated within the building structure, like sinks, drain pipes, and basins. Walls, floors, and basements should never come into contact with water.
But that’s not always the case, these structures are often exposed to water due to plumbing leaks, resulting in damage to the property structure and belongings.
With this in mind, the water damage restoration professionals at SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East have put together tips to prevent water damage from plumbing leaks.
Steps that can be taken to prevent water damage from plumbing leaks
1. Lower Water Pressure
High water pressure is good when you shower or fill a stockpot, but it stresses your pipes, making a plumbing leak more likely. High water pressure dramatically lowers the life of your plumbing as it puts more strain on your pipe joints, appliance valves, and faucets.
The standard pressure ranges from 40 to 85 psi. If it's above that range, a plumber should install a pressure reducer to lower the water pressure.
2. Inspect the Sinks and Drains
Avoid dumping cooking grease down the drain to keep your sinks and drains in good working order. Grease can congeal and cling to pipes whether you flush them with hot or cold water. This causes significant damage or prevents water flow.
When using chemical drain cleaners, be cautious. They may be convenient, but they can eat away at your pipes and cause leaks.
3. Maintain Your Boiler on a Regular Basis
Boiler leaks are prevalent, especially in older units that aren’t serviced regularly. Although a boiler leak may not appear to be a significant problem, it can result in substantial water damage. The moisture can damage your walls or floor. It’s important to invite a professional to fix boiler leaks and service them regularly.
4. Install Leak Detectors
A leak detector is an electronic device that detects water or flooding and sounds an alert. There are different models of these devices. Some have Wi-Fi connectivity, phone alerts, temperature sensors, and more.
You can install these devices in critical areas with plumbing installations to know when there’s a plumbing leakage. Active alarms built into the water system can cut off the water supply if there is a leak.
5. Insulate Pipes
During the winter, pipes leak and can explode due to environmental factors. When the water inside the lines begins to freeze because of the cold weather, it expands the pipe and can cause it to burst.
Water lines should be insulated in places like your garage, basement, and even beneath your sinks to protect your pipes. You'll be at peace knowing your pipes are safe with this insulation.
6. Act Quickly
Even with all these steps, you may still not entirely prevent leaks, which can lead to water damage. However, when water damage happens, your actions and how fast you react can determine the level of damage you face.
When you see any sign of water damage on your walls, ceiling, carpet, or others, the best thing you can do is to call a professional water damage restoration service. These experts have years of experience dealing with all forms of water damage.
They'll find out what caused the plumbing problem and fix it. After that, they'll clean and fix up any parts of your home or damaged belongings.

Why Professional Water Damage Restoration Is Essential After a Water Ingress
4/5/2022 (Permalink)
Blog Summary: Water damage restoration company SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East discusses the importance of a fast response after a water infiltration and provides a step-by-step breakdown of the remediation process.
What Happens When Water Comes in Contact with Electrical Wiring?
An electrical system is a complex assemblage of switches, circuits, plugs, and wires. Only licensed, professional electricians should inspect, maintain, or repair electrical wiring.
Water seeps into electrical wiring through damaged wire insulation, causing the wiring to degrade over time. Corroded electrical wires are a fire hazard, especially if water is present. Once water penetrates an electrical system, it will require professional water damage restoration services to restore function.
Signs Of Water Damage to Electrical Wiring
In most homes, electricians install electrical wiring behind walls and ceilings. Because the wiring is concealed, the signs of water damage are difficult to detect at the onset. There are some warning signs associated with water damage to electrical wiring.
If you experience any of the following, turn off the electrical power at the source and call an electrician:
Buzzing or humming sounds coming from light fixtures, switches, or outlets
- Circuit breaker tripping repeatedly
- Any plugged-in, submerged electrical device
- Water running out of a light fixture or switch or down the wall
- A plug outlet that has water running in or out
- A burst water pipe or flood
Water Damage Restoration and Repair
Water infiltration presents serious consequences, and water damage restoration is a vital component of recovery after a flood.
Water damage restoration should start within 48 hours to prevent long-term damage and potential health risks associated with standing water. If left untreated, still water becomes contaminated and leads to mold growth and further damage.
Water damage and mold remediation protocols to repair and restore water damaged property include:
- Inspect and assess to determine the degree of damage and moisture penetration
- Remove water using a professional-grade vacuum and pump to extract floodwater from the premises quickly
- Dry and dehumidify the remaining moisture with specialized equipment
- Clean, sanitize, and deodorize all salvageable furniture and structures
- Restore property and items to a pre-damage condition
Depending on the extent of the damage, the restoration process may include repairs such as replacing carpeting and drywall, or reconstruction of certain areas of the property, including electrical wiring
How to Prevent Mold Growth
Preventing mold growth after a water event requires rapid measures by a professional water damage restoration company. Moisture fosters mold growth. Addressing the water damage immediately drastically reduces the likelihood of mold growth.
Not all mold is life-threatening. However, some types of molds produce health effects.
Mold scenarios vary and require a process of remediation. SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East is a licensed mold remediation company with dedicated mold removal technicians on staff.

Find Out Why Insulation Requires Professional Water Damage Restoration After Water Infiltration
4/5/2022 (Permalink)
Blog Summary: SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East explains the water damage restoration protocols to dry out water-soaked insulation and the necessary steps to prevent further damage.
Find Out Why Insulation Requires Professional Water Damage Restoration After Water Infiltration
Insulation is crucial for maintaining comfortable and healthy indoor air quality, but it must remain intact, uncompressed, and dry to function. Insulation is highly susceptible to water damage and often is the first casualty of a leaky roof or burst pipe.
When left untreated, water-damaged insulation causes a host of costly repairs and potential health risks. It is crucial to call a professional water damage restoration company at the first sign of moisture penetration.
The Importance of Keeping Insulation Dry
Damaged insulation compromises the home’s ability to retain heat and causes an increase in energy consumption. Moisture causes the insulation to deteriorate, and the extra weight of wet insulation damages pipes. The worst-case scenario is CUI (corrosion under insulation) — the erosion of the piping system.
How Does Insulation Get Wet?
The most common source of moisture in insulation is a leaky roof. Further causes of water-damaged insulation include:
- Humidity
- Plumbing issues such as leaks
- Condensation dripping from cold service devices
- Snow and rain blowing in through air vents
- Ground moisture and flooding
What Happens to Wet Insulation?
Damp insulation loses its functionality, specifically its ability to inhibit heat transfer. Depending on the type of material, the wet insulation loses its thermal protective value by up to 40%.
Mold growth on wet insulation is cause for concern – it starts to grow within 24 to 48 hours. All types of insulation materials are susceptible to mold when exposed to moisture. Mold can spread to drywall, ceilings, and wood, rotting those surfaces over time. Some molds produce dangerous airborne toxins, posing a substantial health risk.
Since every mold scenario is different, mold removal is a crucial part of the water damage restoration process. SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East is a licensed mold remediation company with a dedicated mold remediation expert on staff.
How to Treat Wet Insulation
With the aid of a professional water damage restoration service, it may be possible to salvage water-soaked insulation with special water removal machinery and mold remediation. Simply killing the mold growth does not eliminate the problem, as even dead mold has toxic properties.
A certified water damage restoration crew has the equipment and expertise to eradicate mold from your property by taking the following steps:
- Water removal with an industrial-grade vacuum to quickly remove excess water
- Dry and dehumidify the space using specialized equipment and repair the source of the water infiltration
- Thoroughly sanitize and deodorize all salvageable items, furniture, structures, and material
- Mold remediation, including removal of compromised building materials, applying fresh paint, disinfecting (or replacing) carpeting
- Restoring items to their pre-damaged condition wherever possible
It may be possible to restore insulation to its original state by applying antimicrobial agents. SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East recommends a follow-up inspection of the premises to confirm a successful elimination of mold and bacteria.

What To Do After Your Toilet Overflows
1/17/2022 (Permalink)
When a toilet becomes blocked, it can usually be taken care of with a plunger. However, when a flooded toilet is the result of sewer damage, the situation can quickly get out of control.
If you experience a toilet overflow that causes sewer water to flood your bathroom or worse, multiple rooms, do not attempt to clean it up yourself. Raw sewage contains bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens that pose a serious threat to humans and animals. If a sewer backs up into your home, follow these basic steps to handle the situation quickly and safely:
1. Avoid All Contact With the Water
You might be tempted to try to move possessions that have already come in contact with the sewer water, but don’t. The most important thing is keeping you and your family safe and that means avoiding all contact with the water.
2. Shut Off Electricity and Gas If Necessary
If sewer water comes in contact with electrical outlets or gas appliances, it can create a hazardous situation. Shut off your electricity and contact your gas company to turn off the gas until the situation is dealt with.
3. Contact Your Utility Company
The location of the sewer damage determines who is responsible for repairs. Contact your sewage company to alert them to the situation and find out what they know. If it turns out the problem is on your property, you may be responsible for hiring a plumber to fix it.
4. Call a Water Damage Mitigation Specialist
Cleaning up sewage requires protective clothing, specialized equipment, and knowledge about how to avoid spreading contamination to other parts of your property. SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East is an experienced water damage and mitigation company that has all of these things and can return your home to normal quickly and efficiently.

Leaky Windows? | SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East
1/28/2021 (Permalink)
What to Do if There Is a Water Leak Around a Window
The natural elements can wear down the integrity of a home. Over time, the homeowner may notice leakage around a window, which can possibly result in wood rot, mold and water damage. The longer the leak is left unaddressed, the more the repairs will cost.
Locate the Problem
Even a slow drip can mean that more water is sitting inside of the wall. Once a homeowner notices moisture trickling from a window when it rains, the first step is to carefully look at the wall around the area to find the source of the leak. However, thanks to gravity, appearances can be deceiving; liquid may pool in one place, but that place is not always the leak's origin.
Two common problem areas are the edge and the rubber seal. The gap between the edge and the surrounding wall is usually sealed with caulk. Eventually, the caulk dries out and begins to peel and chip. Like caulk, the rubber seal situated between the panes and frame can ultimately dry out, creating rips in the rubber.
Gauge the Severity of Damage
Depending on the severity of the damage, the window may need to be replaced. A replacement is usually warranted when decaying or softness is found on nearby surfaces. However, even if the surrounding surfaces seem to be structurally sound, the homeowner should not just re-caulk the gaps without getting an expert's opinion on the full extent of the damage.
SERVPRO® of Corpus Christi East Can Help!
A specialist at SERVPRO® of Corpus Christi East can determine whether any ceiling tiles or drywall have sustained damage. After he assesses the situation, the restoration technician will give the homeowner the best remediation option to make the damage disappear. By acting quickly, the homeowner can prevent expensive repairs in the future. SERVPRO® of Corpus Christi East is always ready to help the residents of New Orleans and the city's surrounding communities solve their water damage problems.
When It Rains, It Pours...
1/22/2021 (Permalink)
When most people think about water damage they think of record-breaking floods, washer machines, and pipes busting in their homes. What they don’t think of is ONE inch of rain. Yes, I said it correctly ONE INCH. One inch of rainfall doesn’t sound like it can do much harm, but when one inch of rain falls on a roof without gutters it allows nearly 2000 gallons of water to soak into the ground around your home's foundation. Gutters are the key to help protect your home against water damage. Gutters collect the rain rolling down your roof and divert it away from your home, and prevent flooding from happening. Another reason gutters benefit your home is by protecting your soil from eroding. When you have faulty gutters it causes the water to wash away the soil and leave the foundation of your home vulnerable and unprotected.
Things to Keep a Close Eye On:
- Debris Build Up: This can lead to pools of water forming on your roof and eventually leaking through your ceiling and into your home. Use a pressure washer or leaf blower to clean them out quarterly
- Storm Damage: After a rain, wind, or hail storm it is important to inspect your gutters for cracks or breaks. If damage has been caused, you can fill the holes with gutter caulk.
- Old Gutters: Older gutters are more susceptible to damage or contain open seams. Make quarterly routine checks for repairs.
For any water damage repairs needed, call the professionals at SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East!

Mold Damage

Water damage due to water heater leak
Have you ever been told that all mold can be removed? Unfortunately, that is far from the truth. It's impossible to remove all mold from a home or business, as mold spores are both indoors and outdoors. Mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. In the State of Texas, the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) regulates businesses that test for mold, or perform mold cleanup (remediation). A licensed mold assessment consultant evaluates whether mold growth is present and to what extent. A mold remediation contractor such as SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East performs the mold cleanup following a protocol written by the consultant. Therefore, to prevent conflicts of interest, the rules prohibit a license from conducting both mold assessment and mold remediation on the same project. Trust our highly IICRC Certified technicians and let them make it "Like it never even happened."

SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East
Have you ever looked at a wall and said, “It looks dry” or “It feels dry”? Oftentimes a structure that has been affected by water intrusion doesn’t dry quickly when we rely on mother nature. Here at SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East, we use the science behind the process of drying a structure. When materials are wet, moisture will naturally move to drier air at the surface of the material, but only if the air is drier. Unfortunately, the Coastal Bend area has higher humidity than other areas which can factor in the process. We have the monitoring and drying equipment to help speed up the drying process before it leads to further damage such as mold or wood rot. Feel free to call our office at (361)985-6444 for any questions.

Category 3 Water Damage
6/19/2018 (Permalink)
Sewage/flood overflow is a dangerous type of Category 3 water damage.
Category 3 Water Damage
There are many water sources that contribute to your water damage, and they are classified as Category 1 (Clean Water), Category 2 (Gray Water), and Category 3 (Black Water). Out of the three categories, category 3 is the most unsanitary type of water damage.
Flood water is one source of unsanitary water in a home or business. This is something to be aware of as we enter hurricane season. But the most common source of category 3 water is a sewer back up. Per IICRC guidelines, any porous materials that come in contact with the contaminated water should be removed and disposed. This includes carpet, carpet pad, and drywall.
Our water technicians are all IICRC certified and know what to do, and the steps to take, in cleaning up category 3 water. We know how stressful water damage can be, and they are there to help guide you through any water situation that you encounter.
Remember, the sooner you mitigate your water damage, the less chance you have of major repairs. Give us a call at 361-985-6444 – we’re here to help!
