What to do in the event of storm damage
7/20/2022 (Permalink)
Blog Summary: SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East explains what homeowners and businesses should do in the event of storm damage.
Understanding what to do after a storm can significantly alter the course of events, especially if your roof or any part of your home is damaged. Storm damage often leads to water damage that can affect your home's furnishings, rugs, and other properties.
But while recovering from storm damage might be difficult, you can find solace in the knowledge that many people have gone through similar situations.
The professionals at SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East, a storm damage restoration company in South Side, Corpus Christi, TX, have outlined the following steps to take after storm damage.
1. Safety first
The aftermath of a storm can result in additional significant threats and injuries, regardless of whether your home was seriously wind-damaged, struck by lightning, or even flooded. Making sure you and your loved ones are secure and safe is the first thing you need to do. You can assess your property and take pictures of the damage at a later, safer time. So don't take any extra risks.
Be alert to potential dangers, including downed power lines, broken windows, cracked walls, flooding or standing water, and even gas line issues. Also, watch out for other sharp objects such as displaced screws, nails, broken glass, and other items frequently found in storm damage. If your home's roof is shaky or a section of a wall has collapsed, you may want to evacuate or make plans for a temporary residence for you and your family.
2. Examine and record the damages
Once you feel it is secure enough to move about your house, it's time to evaluate the entire area and determine the extent of the damage. While seeing your home destroyed can be very traumatic, you must take pictures of the damage to show as proof to your insurance provider.
Take the time to thoroughly inspect each room and every area of your property (provided it's safe to do so) and note both significant and minor faults.
3. Get in touch with your insurance provider or company
It's essential to contact your insurance provider and inform them about the storm damage, especially if your home insurance offers such. Typically, the insurance company will send an evaluator to inspect the damage or evidence of such and determine the amount the insurer will pay to cover repairs.
4. Throw out the debris when it's safe
You can start clearing up the storm's debris after you're sure the storm has passed. Clear any debris from your deck, patio, detached buildings, garden, and gutters to keep the water away from your home's foundation and make sure your downspouts are functioning correctly.
5. Make short-term repairs to reduce property damage
If a portion of the roof directly above the living space suffers substantial damage, water leaks may cause interior property damage. To stop more inside damage, be sure you place a bucket under any leaks and move any valuables from the vicinity. While simple repairs can be made immediately, more significant damages need to be waterproofed using a strapped tarping technique.
6. Contact an experienced water damage professional
If your home was flooded as a result of the storm, then it's essential to hire a storm repair company to restore it back to its original state. Storm damage restoration companies like SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East are equipped with the right tools to remove any moisture in your home to prevent structural and property damage. They will clear away any standing water, dry your walls, ceiling, and other structures, and restore any affected belongings to their original state.
Hiring a water damage specialist is also the best way to prevent mold from developing in your home after storm damage.

How Water Damage Affects Homes and the Importance of Professional Water Damage Restoration
4/5/2022 (Permalink)
Blog Summary: SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East details the effects of hidden water damage on residential homes and the importance of contacting a water damage restoration for professional cleanup and repair before further damage occurs.
Causes of Hidden Water Leaks
Water leaks in a home are damaging and potentially dangerous, and hidden leaks are even more so. Learn how to spot hidden water leaks, including the most likely spots to find them, appreciate the dangers of hidden water leaks, and why professional water damage restoration is vital to preserving and protecting the home.
All plumbing pipes and systems age over time due to regular wear and tear and the effects of the environment. Other reasons water pipes may start to leak include:
- High Water Pressure: Water pipes and systems have a maximum pressure they can handle before seams and weakened areas of the piping burst. Clogs, constrictions in the pipe, or miscalibrated pressure regulators can cause high water pressure.
- Corrosion: Water pipes and connectors are often metal. Though treated with anticorrosive treatments, these metals will wear over time, leading to cracks, holes, or loosened connections.
- Freezing Temperatures: Extreme cold temperatures can cause water to freeze in the pipes, leading to possible breaks. It can also increase small leaks, expanding any cracks when the ice forms.
- Damage or Improper Installation: Inexperienced technicians can damage pipes repairs on other systems in the home, such as electrical wiring or ductwork. Leaks could also result from poorly installed or repaired pipes or connectors.
Dangers of Hidden Water Leaks
Hidden water leaks can result in real danger for a home and its residents. Structural damage is the most apparent effect and may be severe by the time it is detectable.
Weakened floors could collapse, leading to expensive water damage and potential injury. There are also risks of exposure to:
- Mold spores and mildew
- Asbestos and fiberglass insulation
- Infestations of insects and vermin
The Importance of Professional Water Damage Restoration
Professional water damage restoration and mold remediation are critical, especially in situations where hidden water leaks cause extensive damage that may not be visible. A professional restoration company has training and experience assessing and restoring residential and commercial properties, so they can spot the signs of hidden water leaks quickly.

Why SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East for Hotel Water Damage
7/13/2021 (Permalink)
Don't let water damage close your hotel. SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East has the know-how to quickly remediate the damage.
SERVPRO Can Efficiently Remove Water from Your Corpus Christi Hotel
Being near the beach, Corpus Christi East is home to many hotels providing luxurious rooms to travelers and those on vacation. If water damage from burst pipes impacts your hotel carpets, you need water mitigation quickly. You want as little as possible disruption to your guests coming in and out of the hotel. The last thing you want is guests writing bad reviews because of water issues.
How Do You Restore Carpeting After Water Damage?
More than just your carpets get impacted by water intrusion in your hotel. Hallways, staircases, and wooden structures such as the service desk can be damaged. Water restoration in Corpus Christi East involving carpets begins with the right water extraction process. The proper extraction tools can remove water faster than drying alone. SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East has trained water restoration technicians (WRT) who precisely know what is needed to restore your carpets.
Stationary Extraction Tools
While moving extraction tools help certain types of materials, they are not always the best thing for plush carpets. Stationary extraction methods involve using the technician's weight to apply downward pressure and push the water to the surface. The water then gets pulled through a vacuum system attached to the device. Our largest stationary units can cover 200 square inches at one time. Other extraction methods our WRT techs can use include:
- Portable or truck-mounted units
- Carpet wands
- Self-propelled extraction tools
Once the water gets extracted from your carpet and padding, the drying process begins. We use industrial-strength air movers and dehumidifiers in the correct ratio for optimum drying power. Our teams work quickly and efficiently to get the job done. You want to get back to business as soon as possible, and we want that too.
For any commercial water damage needs, SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East is here with a team of trained professionals; We're Faster To Any Size Disaster. Contact SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East at (361) 985-6444 for expert water restoration service.

Steps before a hurricane
- Full tank of gas
- Reinforce your garage doors
- Unclog or clear all outdoor drains, rain gutters, and downspouts.
Steps during a hurricane
- Turn off propane tanks
- Keep curtains and blinds closed
- Stay in a small interior room, closet or hallway on the lowest level of your building or home
Steps after a hurricane
- Never use a generator inside your home, garage, shed, or any enclosed area because of deadly levels of carbon monoxide can build up and remain for hours- even after the generator is shut off.

July 4th is a great time to spend time with family and friends, but it’s important to remember the hazards associated with firework safety. According to the National Safety Council (NSC), fireworks are best viewed in a public display conducted by a professional. Fireworks may be legal in some areas, however, the NSC strongly suggest leaving fireworks to trained individuals. It’s noted that over 50 percent of incidents are more likely to happen to children and adults under the age of 20 years old. Consider these helpful tips when handling fireworks should you choose to do so.
- Light one firework at a time.
- Keep water handy.
- Keep fireworks out of children’s reach.
- Pets are safer indoors during firework displays.
Fire safety is important and fireworks can potentially lead to serious injuries or property damage. SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East wants you to have a safe 4th of July.

Firework Safety

Fourth of July is a great time to celebrate with family and friends, but unfortunately, this time of year also brings the hazards associated with fireworks.
- Keep fireworks out of children’s reach.
- Pets are safer indoors during firework displays.
- Don’t throw fireworks or hold them in your hand.
- Keep water handy
- Light one firework at a time.
Fire safety is important and fireworks can potentially lead to serious injuries or property damage. SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East wants you to have a safe 4th of July.
