5 things to do when dealing with water damage in your business

7/20/2022 (Permalink)

Blog summary: SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East outlines five tips to help combat water damage in a commercial space.

Water damage can result in costly issues for your business, from structural damage to spoiled equipment and loss of essential documents. According to The Hartford, 15% of all small business property damage and liability insurance claims involve water and freezing damage.

Although business property insurance provides financial security for a range of water damage claims, it would be better if you tried to prevent this issue in the first place.

The professionals at SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East, a commercial damage restoration company in Flour Buff Corpus Christi, TX, have outlined these five tips to repair water damage in a business.

1. Remove the standing water

You must remove the stagnant water from your business as the first step in repairing water damage. The longer water lingers, the more harm it will cause. You can use submersible pumps (if you can find one) to remove the water. Professionals recommend that standing water be removed from property within 48 hours to prevent the development of harmful organisms and mold.

2. Dry out everywhere

After you remove the standing water, it's time to dry up the affected areas. It’s essential to get rid of any moisture during the restoration process to prevent mold development. To dry the area, you can use towels, dehumidifiers, mops, air conditioning, and desiccants. Dehumidifiers eliminate humidity; desiccants help in absorbing extra moisture.

3. Remove and discard any porous materials that have been damaged

Carpets, unsealed cement, wood, and other items have pores. If any of these items has water damage, the only way to prevent additional damage is to discard the items or simply cut off the area that was soaked.

When porous materials are drenched in water, the result can be a fungal infestation like mildew, which spreads more quickly than mold and can result in more significant damage. If you have sentimental value and aren't ready to discard them, lay out any damaged furniture or rugs in the sun to completely dry them. But remember that the product won't be as it was before.

4. Check for mold and mildew

Another thing to do is to look for mold and mildew growth. You must be prompt when checking because mold and mildew can start to grow within 24 hours in the right conditions. If you notice any mold, you should take extra precautions because it can be very harmful to people.

If you have severe mold issues, you should try to stop airflow in the affected area and seek professional assistance.

5. Change damaged parts

Even if you immediately dry everything out and remove the water, certain parts of your property, like baseboards, drywall, and siding, can still be damaged.

You must take additional caution when replacing and removing damaged materials. Your property could suffer even more harm if structural elements are improperly removed.

Hire a water damage restoration specialist

Water damage can lead to intolerable conditions in a place of business, so you need to act quickly to restore your office or facility. When you hire a professional commercial water damage restoration company, the water will be quickly removed, the area dried and disinfected, and any repairs can then be made. These companies have a team of experienced and licensed water damage technicians who can take on any water incident effectively.

Reasons to hire SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East commercial water restoration services.

1. Find Hidden Moisture

Most times when water damage seems to be cured, it rarely is. The moisture seeps deep into these surfaces affecting areas where it shouldn't be. It soaks through fabric and fibers, clinging to the deepest layers.

It's not dry just because it feels and looks dry. Water may still be lurking beneath your floors and walls. SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East will eradicate excess moisture, protecting your property.

2. They Have Specialized Equipment

How do you intend to remove the water if you try to do it yourself? With buckets, perhaps? Unfortunately, it won't work unless you have specialized tools and equipment.

Your property needs to dry swiftly from top to bottom. Water extraction vacuums, dehumidifiers, high-grade pumps, air filters, and vacuums are just a few required tools. You may also need specialist equipment to locate the source of the problem. This could include leak monitoring equipment and moisture sensors. SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East has these specialized tools to ensure the job is done correctly.

3. Cost and Time-Saving

Water damage remediation is time-consuming and difficult, carpet removal, decayed wood removal, and cleaning are just some of the tasks you'll have to perform. You must also dispose of any broken materials.

Another problem that many people overlook is the emotional strain it might cause. It's heartbreaking to clean up your ruined home. You can reduce the stress by hiring SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East to do it for you.

4. Thorough Cleaning

You may think that cleaning up after a flood or severe water damage is sufficient. However, the process can take much longer than you anticipate if you don't have the right equipment, which can inflict even more damage.

SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East has the tools they need to do the jobs well. This will expedite the procedure and reduce damage and downtime.

5. Mold Prevention and Remediation

If you have hidden dampness anywhere in your office or commercial facility, you provide a breeding habitat for mold. Mold thrives in dark, wet environments, where it can grow undetected. It can grow behind walls, in crevices, and even beneath your floor.

Mold can cause health effects. It must be removed since it can cause potential problems if left unchecked.

SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East Explains the Common Cause of Water Damage in Business Places.

5/5/2022 (Permalink)

Water damage is a nightmare in homes, but an even greater risk for businesses. Commercial water damage can result in significant financial implications. You could lose irreplaceable documents, gadgets with vital files, and revenue due to downtime. All of these are why it’s essential to prevent water damage, and tackle water damage head-on with restoration services if it happens.

The water damage restoration professionals at SERVPRO Corpus of Christi East, a leading water restoration and cleaning company in South Side Corpus Christi, TX, have outlined the common causes of water damage in commercial spaces and what you can do to prevent it.

7 Common Commercial Water Damage Causes

1. Broken Pipes

The pipes in your office or facility could be damaged or even explode due to a variety of circumstances, including freezing temperatures and pressure changes. If you see water stains on your ceilings, building walls, or floors, you may have water damage caused by pipe problems.

It’s important to have it fixed immediately. For effective water damage restoration, reach out to professionals like SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East to take a look at it.

2. Building Foundation Leaks

If gutters aren't cleaned regularly, they can become clogged, allowing water to flow to the building foundation instead of being directed away from it. Some of the most common signs of building foundation leaks are wet framing and nearby puddles. Water damage to your foundation can also be caused by poor drainage systems.

3. Roof Leaks

The roof's job is to keep the residents and everything inside the building safe from the elements, like the rain and heat from the sun. A leaky roof, on the other hand, doesn’t do that well. An office or da facility's roof can be damaged due to age, heavy storms, and even snow. This leaves the property exposed, which leads to water damage.

4. Damage to the Windows

Damages to a property's windows or window seals are another major source of commercial water damage. Water can sneak into the structure through damaged or improperly sealed windows. Excess moisture, if not treated quickly, would cause mold, wood damage, and other issues.

To avoid this, make sure the windows aren't broken and that the seals aren't broken.

 5. Natural Disasters

Nature can take its toll even when you’ve done everything right. Violet storms, tornadoes, and others can strike without warning in a variety of ways, damaging part of your property and allowing water to get into the building.

6. Problems with the HVAC System

HVAC systems work to cool or heat the air through a series of pipes. These pipes and ducts can wear out and become damaged over time, resulting in leaks. To avoid water damage, the HVAC system should be cleaned regularly, and any excess water in the compression tanks should be removed.

7. Damaged Sprinkler system

Commercial premises are required by law to have fire alarms and sprinkler systems installed in their buildings for fire protection. The sprinkler system is supposed to be triggered by excess heat or fire. However, the sprinkler system can malfunction, resulting in water damage.

In the Event of Water Damage, Hire a Professional

It’s possible to do everything right and still end up with commercial water damage. Your approach to it, however, will determine how bad things get.

Inviting professional water damage companies like SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East will ensure you take the proper steps to address any damage. The SERVPRO team will identify and fix the cause of the water damage, then clean every part of your building and dry or restore any item impacted by the water.

SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East is dedicated to delivering the best service to its customers while also being conscious of their health and the environment. They can clean and restore water damage in any commercial space, from schools, banks, gyms, and other facilities or offices.

Cleaning Water-Damaged Carpets in Corpus Christi Office Buildings

3/21/2022 (Permalink)

Whether a leak from a plumbing fixture or a malfunctioning fire suppression system, water damage in your office building can be destructive to installed materials like carpeting. Our SERVPRO team can help with mitigation and restoration solutions.

Removing Trapped Moisture in Exposed Elements?

Much of the success to be expected during water damage restoration of Corpus Christi East offices comes from removing water in low-pile carpeting. The less saturated and deteriorated this carpeting becomes, the easier it is to extract the moisture and dry the fibers to continue using this flooring. Some of the tools designed for removing water from carpets include:

  • Carpet wands
  • Weighted extractors
  • Drying mats
  • Wet vacuums

Removing the water is often not enough to overcome the damage that burst pipes or flooding can cause exposed flooring. Our carpet cleaning technicians prepare effective cleaning options for glue-down low pile carpeting like hot water extraction. This approach improves the look and feel of carpeting in the damaged space and makes the damage effects "Like it never even happened."

Pulling Up Carpet and Reinstalling

When drying and extraction are not effective for restoring installed carpeting throughout the office, we lean on our general contractor license to provide controlled demolition solutions. Carpet can be pulled up from the tack strips and discarded, leaving a clean space for new flooring to be installed to the property management's wishes.

Water damage in an office space can impact many structural elements and contents. The fast response of our SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East ensures that our mitigation efforts begin as soon as possible. It is our business to get you back in business - and that starts with a phone call to (361) 985-6444.

Preventing Water Damage In Your Corpus Christi East Business

1/5/2022 (Permalink)

A water-related event can be financially devastating to your Corpus Christi East business. A burst pipe can cause your business to close and the lost revenue and the cost of repairs could be devastating.

If your commercial business or non-profit experiences water damage, contact SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East to quickly mitigate the damage.  While insurance plays a crucial role in lessening the financial impact, it is best to prevent the disaster from happening at all. The following tips will help protect your business from water disasters.

  1. Insulate exposed pipes

Properly insulating pipes is the best way to prevent frozen pipes. Dropping temperatures and wind can freeze water inside pipes causing the pipe to burst.

  1. Seal cracks and gaps

Keeping cold air out and warm air in helps to make your home or commercial building more energy efficient and reduces the risk of frozen pipes.  Use caulk, sealants, and weather stripping to seal cracks, gaps and holes in your buildings exterior and foundation.

  1. Keep heat at sufficient levels

Keep the thermostat above 50 degrees, even if the building is vacant is crucial. Nighttime temperatures can be significantly colder than daytime temperatures. These differences in temperature increase the risk of freezing pipes.

  1. Inspect gutters and drainage

Leaves and debris can cause water damage to the exterior and interior walls of your home or business. Having a professional clean the gutters will help ensure water drains properly and away from your home or business.

SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East should be your first choice for any residential or commercial restoration.  Our team of professionals is trained to assess the damage, identify potential threats, respond quickly to extract the water and restore your property to preloss condition.  SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East is available 24/7 by calling (361) 985-6444.

Does Your Short Term Rental Have Mold?

11/19/2021 (Permalink)

When customers come to your bed & breakfast, inn, or hotel, they expect a completely clean and refreshing stay. What they do not expect to see or smell is a mold infestation. If your Corpus Christi East hotel has mold damage, you should hire a restoration company. SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East can help eliminate any growth so your guests can have a clean and comfortable stay.

Hotels usually rely on repeat customers and word of mouth referrals to remain in business. Mold in your hotel can lead to loss of customers because of negative reviews. Our SERVPRO team can take the right measures to eliminate the mold.

When you notice the signs of a mold present in your hotel, it is vital to seek assistance from professionals. Although mold treatment devices and cleaners are available in hardware stores, you cannot be sure which ones are effective. Additionally, you do not want to expose yourself to mold unnecessarily. Professionals have proper training and advanced mold remediation products and equipment.

What causes mold to grow?

Mold enters a building as tiny spores that need moisture, nutrients, favorable temperatures, and oxygen to start growing, digesting, and destroying. Molds grow best in areas with lots of moisture or humidity. Mold can grow on many surfaces, including:

  • Ceiling tiles
  • Wood
  • Paint
  • Wallpaper
  • Sheetrock
  • Carpet
  • Insulation

What does mold remediation involve?

Mold remediation is the process of removing or cleaning up mold from an indoor environment. When removing mold, it is vital to understand that when you disturb it, its spores can get into other areas of the building, creating new mold problems. Before we remove the mold, we can build a containment using negative pressure. We also wear the right personal protective equipment and follow the stipulations of the IICRC with regards to mold removal.

Our team can eliminate the mold by physically removing the affected porous materials and drying the environment effectively. We can also use disinfectants to remove some molds. Direct contact between certain molds and some disinfectants inhibits or slows mold growth.

If you need to remove mold from your hotel, call SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East. Our staff is certified in mold remediation and mold removal by the IICRC.

Commercial Mold Containment with SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East

8/30/2021 (Permalink)

When your Corpus Christi East business faces mold contamination, our professionals are here to help! We have a very specific process to contain the mold from spreading to other areas of your business to protect it. Here are some things you might want to know about our containment!

Containment is important because mold can very easily spread. When there is mold present often times we need to remove drywall and flooring, and the mold spores can travel through the air. The containment will keep any rogue spores in the area that is already affected.

Containment prevents further mold contamination, by creating a barrier between the affected area and the rest of your home. In most cases, this is achieved by the use of plastic sheeting which should block the space from the rest of the home and sealing off air vents, Our team will also set up a fan that exhausts outside the home to create a negative pressure zone which should prevent mold from becoming airborne.

While working in the contained area, our professionals will wear protective safety gear to help prevent tracking spores outside of containment. This may include clothing and shoe covered where are only worn in the workspace and then are removed before going anywhere else.

If you suspect you have a mold problem, give SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East a call!

Reducing Fire Risks in Your Corpus Christi East Office

6/9/2021 (Permalink)

Offices across the United States suffer from fires more often than you think. In fact, every year in the US 17,000 office and stores have fires that result in $800 million in damages. A fire in the workplace is devastating to not only employees but also the business owner. Depending on how large the fire is if you are not prepared the likelihood of recovering can lower. Educating employees on common fire risks and ensuring they follow protocol can help minimize fires.

Damaged Power Cords

Because offices are jampacked with computers, phones, printers, kitchen appliances, and more, over time the electrical system can become overwhelmed. This can cause electrical shock which can result in a spark or fire starting. To avoid this from happening, check on your electrical panels regularly and make sure no wires are corroded.

Dust

If your office is not regularly being cleaned, dust is accumulating. When dust builds up on wood, metal, and plastic it can become a fire hazard. Items that heat up such as computers, microwaves, and wires should always be kept dust-free.

Combustible Materials

Offices often have many papers, boxes, furnishing, and packaging lying around. All of these items can cause a fire to spread quicker than normal. Although many items are important to the daily functions of the office, try to keep it as tidy and minimal as possible. Fireproof furniture and desks should also be considered for the purposes of limiting what gets damaged and how fast the fire spreads.

Computers

Most offices have one computer per employee. Depending on how many employees you have, those can all be fire hazards. Employees should ensure they are not letting their computers overheat, or leaving laptops on materials that can catch fire if the laptop heats up too much. All employees should shut down their computers daily, and especially on the weekend.

After learning of all the fire hazards present in offices, it is important to have a plan. SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East offers an Emergency Ready Profile which allows for us to start mitigation sooner to get you back into your building quicker. Call us today to get one!

Spring Water Conservation Tips Around Your Corpus Christi East Office

3/12/2021 (Permalink)

Clean water that is used for human consumption is a non-renewable resource. Keeping our waterways clean as well as conserving water where we can is important to especially during times of drought and during the spring and summer. Check out how to conserve water in your daily life, especially at work!

Indoor Tips

Bathroom

  • Replace your showerhead and toilet with a water-efficient model.
  • Get in the shower as soon as the water becomes warm enough and take short showers.
  • Turn off the water while you are shaving. Fill the sink with an inch of hot water instead of letting the water run continuously.
  • Check toilets for leaks.
  • Don’t waste water when brushing your teeth or washing your hands. Shut off the water until it’s time to rinse.

Kitchen

  • Run the dishwasher only when full. This practice will save water, energy, detergent, and money.
  • Install faucet aerators.
  • Dry scrape dishes instead of rinsing. Your dishwasher will take care of the rest.
  • Soak pans rather than scrubbing them with the water running. n

Laundry room

  • Wash only full loads.
  • Use the lowest water level setting on the washing machine for light or partial loads whenever possible.
  • Use cold water as often as possible to save energy and conserve hot water for uses that cold water cannot serve.
  • Conventional washing machines can use up to twice as many gallons of water per load compared to high-efficiency machines.

Outdoor Tips

  • Plant water-efficient, well-adapted, and/or native shrubs, trees, and grasses. Choose plants that are drought and heat tolerant and can survive the minimum winter temperatures in your area.
  • Don’t abuse the benefits of an automatic sprinkler system by over-watering. Set it to provide thorough but infrequent watering.
  • Check sprinkler heads regularly to make sure they are working properly.
  • Install rain shut-off devices and adjust sprinklers to eliminate coverage on the pavement.
  • Cover pools and spas. This can save the equivalent of your pool volume each year!
  • Harvest the rain. Buy a rain barrel or a cistern and collect the water from your gutters to water your plants.
  • Use your water efficiently.
  • Don’t waste water by cleaning patios or sidewalks with it; use a broom.
  • Taller grass holds moisture better. Don’t cut more than one-third of its length at one time.
  • Use lots of mulch around your shrubs and trees. It will retain moisture, reduce run-off, moderate soil temperatures, and help with weed control.

Let us know how these tips work for your home or business!

SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East

During this unprecedented time caused by the global pandemic of coronavirus, this is a reminder to our customers that we are specialists in cleaning services, and we adhere to the highest cleaning and sanitation standards.

Specialized Training

We are prepared to clean and disinfect your home or business, according to protocols set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. We have years of experience in dealing with biological contaminants, and we will go beyond the scope of work that regular janitorial staff perform on a daily basis.

The CDC encourages cleaning of high-touch surfaces such as counters, tabletops, doorknobs, light switches, bathroom fixtures, toilets, phones, keyboards, tablets and tables. Other spaces mentioned in the CDC’s guidance for commercial spaces include:

  • Kitchen/Food Areas
  • Bathrooms
  • Schools/Classrooms
  • Offices
  • Retail Spaces
  • Water Fountains
  • Shelving/Racks
  • Sales Counters
  • Carpets and Rugs
  • Stair Handrails
  • Elevator Cars
  • Playground Equipment
  • Fitness Equipment

Specialized Products

The CDC recommends usage of a labeled hospital-grade disinfectant with claims against similar pathogens to the coronavirus. Multiple products in the SERVPRO product line carry the EPA-approved emerging pathogens claims. While there is currently no product tested against this particular strain of the coronavirus, we are following all guidelines as provided by the CDC and local authorities.

Hurricane season is fast approaching, and it's time to start thinking if your Corpus Christi business is ready.  The best way to reduce business interruption following a disaster is to plan for it NOW.

Preparation is the key to making it through any size disaster, whether it's a small water leak, a large fire, or a hurricane.  No one ever plans on a disaster, but pre-planning gives you the peace of mind that you are ready for whatever happens.  Knowing what to do and what to expect in advance is the key to timely mitigation and can help minimize how water and fire damage can affect your business.

By developing a SERVPRO Emergency Ready Profile (ERP) for your business, you minimize business interruption by having an immediate plan of action.  Basically, it's a guide designed for your business to help you get back into your building following a disaster.  It serves as a quick reference of important building and contact information, such as where water or electrical shut-offs are-or your emergency contacts.  Having a quick reference of what to do, how to do it and who to call provides solutions in advance of an emergency so that during the emergency you are "Ready for whatever happens."

This assessment is not cost to you, and contains only the critical information you need in the event of an emergency.  Plus you have 24/7 access to it at any time through a desktop computer, or an app on your phone or tablet.
