What Are The Different Types of Fire Damage?

10/28/2022 (Permalink)

Dealing with the damage from a fire can be a long process.  The fire could have been small, but the smoke from it did the majority of the damage.  On the other side, most of the damage could have been from the fire itself.  Lastly, there could have been another layer of damage caused when the fire was extinguished.  Here are the main types of fire damage that are commonly dealt with.

Flame Damage - This could be from an electrical outlet that caused damage, all the way to a full-blown kitchen fire.

Smoke Damage - Smoke is literally in the air and can (and will) get into everything.  Even after the rebuild is completed, there can still be a lingering smell of smoke to the property unless it is dealt with correctly.

3rd Party Damage - This type of damage comes from any in-house sprinkler system used to put the fire out or from the Fire Department themselves when they get to the scene.

Heat Damage - Even though a part of the structure might have not actually caught fire, it was probably severely heated up.  This can cause structural damage and possible swelling that you might not notice right away.

After a fire, you could be dealing with flame, smoke, water and heat damage at the same time.  FEMA has some great information on what to do after the fire.  The best way to make sure that this is taken care of promptly and properly is to contact the team at SERVPRO to get on the job!

Here Are Some Storm Damage Resources That Are Available To You

10/28/2022 (Permalink)

We have all dealt with storm damage in the past, and since we live in an area affected by hurricanes, we will probably deal with them again in the future.  We all know what to do in order to prepare for a hurricane, but what do we do after the storm has passed?  It is just as important to have a post-storm plan, as one before.

Here are a few things to do immediately after the storm has passed and it is safe to do so.

  1. Before you clean up, take pictures and videos of all of the damage, inside and out.
  2. Start removing anything that is wet or holding water, followed by debris from your home.
  3. Have your insurance policy and contact information ready to go so that you can contact them right away.
  4. Start making any repairs that you can in order to stop future damage.

Remember that if a storm does damage to your property, it probably did to many others as well.  Get in touch with your insurance company as quickly as possible to get the claim started.    We all remember events in the past where it took weeks to get someone out to look at the damage.  Having a plan for after the storm can help keep you on a track to getting back to normal as quickly as possible.  The team at SERVPRO of Corpus Christi is here to help.  Contact us today with any questions on what we can do for you!

Is Bleach Enough to Fix My Mold Problem?

10/28/2022 (Permalink)

The short answer is no. During the height of COVID, we were cleaning and sanitizing everything from door knobs to keyboards.  Anything that was touched by multiple people was getting hit with one kind of cleaner or another.  We should be taking that same approach to getting rid of mold.  Mold has been here much longer than COVID and it isn’t going away anytime soon (maybe an asteroid).  How do we get rid of mold in the home or office?  The CDC says that using bleach to kill mold isn’t always recommended.  Using a bleach/water mixture will most likely destroy the surface mold, but the growth goes much deeper than that.  Bleach cannot penetrate the deeper levels of porous materials, so you will most likely see it come back within a short period of time.

Here are a few things that the EPA says about the basics of mold cleanup.

  1. Moisture control.  If you can keep it dry, you can help control the growth of mold.
  2. Scrub the mold off of hard surfaces with a detergent and water, then dry completely.
  3. Any absorbent materials like carpets, rugs, and ceiling tiles will most likely need to be thrown away.

If you have tried to get rid of mold and can’t seem to keep it away, contact your Corpus Christi SERVPRO professionals today.  We have the experience, equipment, and products to help destroy the mold and to keep it from returning.

Tips On How To Prevent Home/Office Fires

9/6/2022 (Permalink)

Nobody wants to think about their home or office catching on fire.  Sometimes these things happen and they are totally out of our control, but there are a lot of things that we can do to help prevent them.

FEMA’s records show that just over half (50.2%) of residential fires are caused by cooking-related accidents.  The next three biggest reasons are Heating (9.3%), Electrical Malfunction (6.8%), and Intentional (4.5%).

Here are a few things that you can do to help prevent a house fire and protect your family.

1.  Pay attention when cooking.  If you need to step out of the room, ask someone to watch the food until you get back, or turn off the stove and stop cooking.

2.  Test your smoke alarms regularly.

3.  Check the dryers’ airflow.  Pull the lint trap and clean it every time you dry a load of clothes.

4.  Be careful with power cords and strips.  Attaching too many appliances to one power strip can draw more power than the cord is able to handle.  This can cause it to heat up and potentially catch on fire.

5.  Store flammable products away from heat sources.

6.  Place fire extinguishers in key locations around your house.  Make sure that everyone in the home knows how to properly use them.

Preparing for the Corpus Christi Storm Season

8/11/2022 (Permalink)

Storms are a common thing, no matter where we live. Sometimes they pass us right by, other times they leave a path of destruction in their wake. There are multiple classifications for thunderstorms, but the ones that we worry the most about are the ones that are considered “Severe”. We have all heard our local weather person tell us that there is a chance of “severe thunderstorms in our area”, but what does that mean? The National Weather Service considers any thunderstorm that can create hail that is 1 inch or greater in diameter or can create gusts of wind that are 58 miles per hour or greater to be severe.

Most modern shingles are created to withstand winds up to 90 miles per hour, but even the best ones will start to wear down over the years between all of the sun, rain, and possible hail. The best way to prevent roof damage and possible water damage is to make sure that your roof is in good shape. Do you know how old your roof is? If you built your home, you should know, but if you purchased it from someone else, the roof’s age should have been disclosed in the paperwork. In either case, you should have your roof inspected occasionally for any kind of damage. You can hire a professional, climb a ladder and do it yourself (be careful) or maybe grab a friend with a drone and have them do a few slow passes to look for damage.

If you are suffering from storm water damage, make sure to contact the professionals of SERVPRO Corpus Christi at (361) 596-8030.

Steps to fixing a tub, sink, or toilet overflow

7/20/2022 (Permalink)

Blog summary: SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East outlines the steps to fix an overflowing tub, sink, or toilet.

It can be very frustrating to watch as your sink, tub, or toilet steadily fills to the brim and not know what to do about it.

Clogs cause most tub and sink overflows in the main plumbing drain pipe, so the water has nowhere to go and has to flow back up. Similarly, toilet overflows are often caused by a clog or a malfunction in the tank float system, which controls water flow.

Knowing what to do when you have an overflow from either of these amenities can help prevent water damage and safeguard your property. With this in mind, SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East, a leading water damage restoration company in South Side Corpus Christi, TX, has outlined the steps to fix a sink, tub, or toilet overflow.

Fixing a tub overflow

Your bathtub endures about the same amount of abuse from water, soap, hair products, and other solids making their way to the sewage system.

So the bathtub drain has the potential to clog and overflow, just like every other drainage system, which can lead to an interior flood that could result in property damage.

  • The first thing you should do is to stop the flow by turning off the faucet.
  • Next, you must clear the water to access the overflow drain.

Here’s how you can clear the drain:

Plunge the Tub: Get a plunger and use it on the tub to clear out any debris in the drain. The plunger's full force will be focused on the obstruction as you keep pumping it. The tub may start to drain slowly, or you might notice bubbles emerging from the drain. These are signs that the plunger is working correctly. Keep plunging until the drain is clear.

Fixing a sink overflow

  • Insert a brush or pipe cleaner into the overflow hole first and push the brush in and out to eliminate as much accumulation in the hole as possible.
  • Next, make a funnel out of heat-resistant silicone material and insert it into your overflow hole.
  • Finally, fill the funnel with a moderate stream of boiling water. This will remove any leftover accumulation in your drain by loosening it.

How to fix a toilet overflow

  • Gather your equipment and supplies. You’ll need an O-ring, an auger, and a plunger.
  • Remove the tank lid from the toilet and depress the flapper to prevent additional water from entering the bowl.
  • Next, shut off the water supply at the bottom and behind the toilet.
  • Use the auger and plunger to generate enough suction to evacuate any debris in the toilet bowl that might still be causing a problem.
  • Water still flowing? It is preferable to call a licensed plumber at this point. They'll probably use an industrial auger to clear the blockage, and the toilet may also need to be taken apart and reassembled.

What next? Get professional water damage restoration

An overflowing tub, sink, or toilet may likely result in water damage, especially if you don’t notice it on time. What you do as regards the water damage will determine whether it will just be one of those silly incidents or one that leads to massive losses.

If any part of your home, like the ceiling and belongings like a rug or furniture, is impacted by the water, then it’s essential to have it cleaned to get rid of the moisture and prevent mold formation.

This is where water damage professionals like SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East can help.

5 things to do when dealing with water damage in your business

7/20/2022 (Permalink)

Blog summary: SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East outlines five tips to help combat water damage in a commercial space.

Water damage can result in costly issues for your business, from structural damage to spoiled equipment and loss of essential documents. According to The Hartford, 15% of all small business property damage and liability insurance claims involve water and freezing damage.

Although business property insurance provides financial security for a range of water damage claims, it would be better if you tried to prevent this issue in the first place.

The professionals at SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East, a commercial damage restoration company in Flour Buff Corpus Christi, TX, have outlined these five tips to repair water damage in a business.

1. Remove the standing water

You must remove the stagnant water from your business as the first step in repairing water damage. The longer water lingers, the more harm it will cause. You can use submersible pumps (if you can find one) to remove the water. Professionals recommend that standing water be removed from property within 48 hours to prevent the development of harmful organisms and mold.

2. Dry out everywhere

After you remove the standing water, it's time to dry up the affected areas. It’s essential to get rid of any moisture during the restoration process to prevent mold development. To dry the area, you can use towels, dehumidifiers, mops, air conditioning, and desiccants. Dehumidifiers eliminate humidity; desiccants help in absorbing extra moisture.

3. Remove and discard any porous materials that have been damaged

Carpets, unsealed cement, wood, and other items have pores. If any of these items has water damage, the only way to prevent additional damage is to discard the items or simply cut off the area that was soaked.

When porous materials are drenched in water, the result can be a fungal infestation like mildew, which spreads more quickly than mold and can result in more significant damage. If you have sentimental value and aren't ready to discard them, lay out any damaged furniture or rugs in the sun to completely dry them. But remember that the product won't be as it was before.

4. Check for mold and mildew

Another thing to do is to look for mold and mildew growth. You must be prompt when checking because mold and mildew can start to grow within 24 hours in the right conditions. If you notice any mold, you should take extra precautions because it can be very harmful to people.

If you have severe mold issues, you should try to stop airflow in the affected area and seek professional assistance.

5. Change damaged parts

Even if you immediately dry everything out and remove the water, certain parts of your property, like baseboards, drywall, and siding, can still be damaged.

You must take additional caution when replacing and removing damaged materials. Your property could suffer even more harm if structural elements are improperly removed.

Hire a water damage restoration specialist

Water damage can lead to intolerable conditions in a place of business, so you need to act quickly to restore your office or facility. When you hire a professional commercial water damage restoration company, the water will be quickly removed, the area dried and disinfected, and any repairs can then be made. These companies have a team of experienced and licensed water damage technicians who can take on any water incident effectively.

What to do in the event of storm damage

7/20/2022 (Permalink)

Blog Summary: SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East explains what homeowners and businesses should do in the event of storm damage.

Understanding what to do after a storm can significantly alter the course of events, especially if your roof or any part of your home is damaged. Storm damage often leads to water damage that can affect your home's furnishings, rugs, and other properties.

But while recovering from storm damage might be difficult, you can find solace in the knowledge that many people have gone through similar situations.

The professionals at SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East, a storm damage restoration company in South Side, Corpus Christi, TX, have outlined the following steps to take after storm damage.

1. Safety first

The aftermath of a storm can result in additional significant threats and injuries, regardless of whether your home was seriously wind-damaged, struck by lightning, or even flooded. Making sure you and your loved ones are secure and safe is the first thing you need to do. You can assess your property and take pictures of the damage at a later, safer time. So don't take any extra risks.

Be alert to potential dangers, including downed power lines, broken windows, cracked walls, flooding or standing water, and even gas line issues. Also, watch out for other sharp objects such as displaced screws, nails, broken glass, and other items frequently found in storm damage. If your home's roof is shaky or a section of a wall has collapsed, you may want to evacuate or make plans for a temporary residence for you and your family.

2. Examine and record the damages

Once you feel it is secure enough to move about your house, it's time to evaluate the entire area and determine the extent of the damage. While seeing your home destroyed can be very traumatic, you must take pictures of the damage to show as proof to your insurance provider.

Take the time to thoroughly inspect each room and every area of your property (provided it's safe to do so) and note both significant and minor faults.

3. Get in touch with your insurance provider or company

It's essential to contact your insurance provider and inform them about the storm damage, especially if your home insurance offers such. Typically, the insurance company will send an evaluator to inspect the damage or evidence of such and determine the amount the insurer will pay to cover repairs.

4. Throw out the debris when it's safe

You can start clearing up the storm's debris after you're sure the storm has passed. Clear any debris from your deck, patio, detached buildings, garden, and gutters to keep the water away from your home's foundation and make sure your downspouts are functioning correctly.

5. Make short-term repairs to reduce property damage

If a portion of the roof directly above the living space suffers substantial damage, water leaks may cause interior property damage. To stop more inside damage, be sure you place a bucket under any leaks and move any valuables from the vicinity. While simple repairs can be made immediately, more significant damages need to be waterproofed using a strapped tarping technique.

6. Contact an experienced water damage professional

If your home was flooded as a result of the storm, then it's essential to hire a storm repair company to restore it back to its original state. Storm damage restoration companies like SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East are equipped with the right tools to remove any moisture in your home to prevent structural and property damage. They will clear away any standing water, dry your walls, ceiling, and other structures, and restore any affected belongings to their original state.

Hiring a water damage specialist is also the best way to prevent mold from developing in your home after storm damage.

Fire Safety Tips for Summer in Corpus Christi, TX

6/29/2022 (Permalink)

Warm weather is here! It's time to switch from sweaters to shorts, deep fryers to grills, and indoor parties to backyard barbecues. Just because we're less inclined to switch on the heat does not mean that we shouldn't be vigilant when it comes to protecting ourselves and our property from fire hazards. See below for high-risk areas for fire damage and how to maintain them.

Summer Fire Safety Tips

Fire cannot be avoided when you're preparing a perfectly cooked steak or patty on the grill. From the get-go, you've got inherent risks. Before starting a grill, be sure to check all potential problematic points including the propane tank, the hose, and all connecting points. You can do this while your meat is marinating or while you're trimming your chicken!

When starting a charcoal grill, charcoal should only be soaked with charcoal starter fluid. Avoid using lighter fluid as that can create a burst of heat and flames can get out of control quickly!

Nearly 20% of all grill structure fires occur due to failure to clean the grill before and after use. Give your grill a nice scrape down while it's hot so it's ready to go for next time!

Safety first, safety first, safety first! Fill a bucket with water and set it next to your put before you even build a fire. Avoid throwing leaves, pine cones, pine needs, and paper into a fire pit as they catch fire quickly and can result in dangerous floating embers.

In any emergency situation, always call 9-1-1 before calling SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East. Once a fire has been properly handled by the fire department, give us a call at (361) 985-6444! We're always "Here to Help!"

SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East explains how to prevent water damage.

5/17/2022 (Permalink)

Blog Summary: Water damages can destroy valuable property. Here are the steps you can take to prevent water damage from plumbing leaks.

Water is only supposed to be regulated within the building structure, like sinks, drain pipes, and basins. Walls, floors, and basements should never come into contact with water.

But that’s not always the case, these structures are often exposed to water due to plumbing leaks, resulting in damage to the property structure and belongings.

With this in mind, the water damage restoration professionals at SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East have put together tips to prevent water damage from plumbing leaks.

Steps that can be taken to prevent water damage from plumbing leaks

1. Lower Water Pressure

High water pressure is good when you shower or fill a stockpot, but it stresses your pipes, making a plumbing leak more likely. High water pressure dramatically lowers the life of your plumbing as it puts more strain on your pipe joints, appliance valves, and faucets.

The standard pressure ranges from 40 to 85 psi. If it's above that range, a plumber should install a pressure reducer to lower the water pressure.

2. Inspect the Sinks and Drains

Avoid dumping cooking grease down the drain to keep your sinks and drains in good working order. Grease can congeal and cling to pipes whether you flush them with hot or cold water. This causes significant damage or prevents water flow.

When using chemical drain cleaners, be cautious. They may be convenient, but they can eat away at your pipes and cause leaks.

3. Maintain Your Boiler on a Regular Basis

Boiler leaks are prevalent, especially in older units that aren’t serviced regularly. Although a boiler leak may not appear to be a significant problem, it can result in substantial water damage. The moisture can damage your walls or floor. It’s important to invite a professional to fix boiler leaks and service them regularly.

4. Install Leak Detectors

A leak detector is an electronic device that detects water or flooding and sounds an alert. There are different models of these devices. Some have Wi-Fi connectivity, phone alerts, temperature sensors, and more.

You can install these devices in critical areas with plumbing installations to know when there’s a plumbing leakage. Active alarms built into the water system can cut off the water supply if there is a leak.

5. Insulate Pipes

During the winter, pipes leak and can explode due to environmental factors. When the water inside the lines begins to freeze because of the cold weather, it expands the pipe and can cause it to burst.

Water lines should be insulated in places like your garage, basement, and even beneath your sinks to protect your pipes. You'll be at peace knowing your pipes are safe with this insulation.

6. Act Quickly

Even with all these steps, you may still not entirely prevent leaks, which can lead to water damage. However, when water damage happens, your actions and how fast you react can determine the level of damage you face.

When you see any sign of water damage on your walls, ceiling, carpet, or others, the best thing you can do is to call a professional water damage restoration service. These experts have years of experience dealing with all forms of water damage.

They'll find out what caused the plumbing problem and fix it. After that, they'll clean and fix up any parts of your home or damaged belongings.

Reasons to hire SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East commercial water restoration services.

1. Find Hidden Moisture

Most times when water damage seems to be cured, it rarely is. The moisture seeps deep into these surfaces affecting areas where it shouldn't be. It soaks through fabric and fibers, clinging to the deepest layers.

It's not dry just because it feels and looks dry. Water may still be lurking beneath your floors and walls. SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East will eradicate excess moisture, protecting your property.

2. They Have Specialized Equipment

How do you intend to remove the water if you try to do it yourself? With buckets, perhaps? Unfortunately, it won't work unless you have specialized tools and equipment.

Your property needs to dry swiftly from top to bottom. Water extraction vacuums, dehumidifiers, high-grade pumps, air filters, and vacuums are just a few required tools. You may also need specialist equipment to locate the source of the problem. This could include leak monitoring equipment and moisture sensors. SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East has these specialized tools to ensure the job is done correctly.

3. Cost and Time-Saving

Water damage remediation is time-consuming and difficult, carpet removal, decayed wood removal, and cleaning are just some of the tasks you'll have to perform. You must also dispose of any broken materials.

Another problem that many people overlook is the emotional strain it might cause. It's heartbreaking to clean up your ruined home. You can reduce the stress by hiring SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East to do it for you.

4. Thorough Cleaning

You may think that cleaning up after a flood or severe water damage is sufficient. However, the process can take much longer than you anticipate if you don't have the right equipment, which can inflict even more damage.

SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East has the tools they need to do the jobs well. This will expedite the procedure and reduce damage and downtime.

5. Mold Prevention and Remediation

If you have hidden dampness anywhere in your office or commercial facility, you provide a breeding habitat for mold. Mold thrives in dark, wet environments, where it can grow undetected. It can grow behind walls, in crevices, and even beneath your floor.

Mold can cause health effects. It must be removed since it can cause potential problems if left unchecked.

The common signs of roof storm damage

5/17/2022 (Permalink)

Blog Summary: Your roof can be damaged without you knowing it. SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East highlights the telltale signs of roof storm damage.

Storm damage is one of the most prevalent causes of roof damage, leading to a repair or replacement before the roof has reached its expected lifespan. Wind, heavy rain, hail, and falling objects can all cause damage to a property’s roof. Although some damage is evident, others might be difficult or impossible to spot—especially from the street level.

Early discovery of the situation, on the other hand, is critical for reducing damage, especially water damage, to your home or business. The water restoration professionals at SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East have outlined the following telltale signs of roof storm damage to look out for in your home or business space.

Signs of roof storm damage

1. Water Damage Signs

Some of the most obvious indicators of roof leaks inside the house are ceilings and wall damage. If you notice discoloration of any kind on your ceiling or walls, you have a leak somewhere.

These water stains could suggest a roof leak or a plumbing leak depending on the location. Leaks can ruin your home's infrastructure from the inside out, allowing harmful molds to thrive.

It’s essential to check for leaks regularly or hire a professional to inspect your roof and plumbing.

Other signs of a roof leak include wet insulation, mold, and water spots around the siding of your property.

2. Shingle Granule Loss

After a severe storm, keep an eye out for missing shingles; these are common signs of damage that leave the roof vulnerable to the elements. Due to high wind pressure, shingles can be shattered, totally blown off, or curl up with fractured edges. Similarly, fallen branches might dislodge sections carried away by the wind, exposing the underlying area to severe weather.

Ensure to replace damaged shingle as soon as possible to prevent water damage when the next storm hits.

3. Scattered Debris

Broken decking pieces, nails, leaves, twigs, and other debris discovered near a residence signal that the roof should be inspected. If left untreated, the piled-up garbage can attract pests and even turn into compost, encouraging weed growth.

This debris can cause clogs in the gutter and drainage system when carried over by rain, worsening the moisture and wetness on the roofs. Look for debris in every nook and cranny of the rooftop and enlist professional help to clear it regularly.

4. Cracked Chimneys

Strong winds can damage exterior components such as chimneys. Inspect the joints between the chimneys and the roof for cracks and holes. These joints typically deteriorate over time due to wear and tear. Nevertheless, a strong wind might blow away the mortar that joins the chimney to the roof. Additionally, keep an eye out for the missing chimney top. Any such holes or missing caps in chimneys should be repaired as soon as possible to avoid water leaks and structural difficulties in the interiors of the building or residence.

The Impact Of Storm Damaged Roofs

If not correctly handled, storm damage can lead to leaks that allow water into your home, damaging your property structure and belongings. But while there’s a lot you can do to prevent roof damage and leaks, water damage happens occasionally, and how quickly you act can make a significant difference.

SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East Explains the Common Cause of Water Damage in Business Places.

5/5/2022 (Permalink)

Water damage is a nightmare in homes, but an even greater risk for businesses. Commercial water damage can result in significant financial implications. You could lose irreplaceable documents, gadgets with vital files, and revenue due to downtime. All of these are why it’s essential to prevent water damage, and tackle water damage head-on with restoration services if it happens.

The water damage restoration professionals at SERVPRO Corpus of Christi East, a leading water restoration and cleaning company in South Side Corpus Christi, TX, have outlined the common causes of water damage in commercial spaces and what you can do to prevent it.

7 Common Commercial Water Damage Causes

1. Broken Pipes

The pipes in your office or facility could be damaged or even explode due to a variety of circumstances, including freezing temperatures and pressure changes. If you see water stains on your ceilings, building walls, or floors, you may have water damage caused by pipe problems.

It’s important to have it fixed immediately. For effective water damage restoration, reach out to professionals like SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East to take a look at it.

2. Building Foundation Leaks

If gutters aren't cleaned regularly, they can become clogged, allowing water to flow to the building foundation instead of being directed away from it. Some of the most common signs of building foundation leaks are wet framing and nearby puddles. Water damage to your foundation can also be caused by poor drainage systems.

3. Roof Leaks

The roof's job is to keep the residents and everything inside the building safe from the elements, like the rain and heat from the sun. A leaky roof, on the other hand, doesn’t do that well. An office or da facility's roof can be damaged due to age, heavy storms, and even snow. This leaves the property exposed, which leads to water damage.

4. Damage to the Windows

Damages to a property's windows or window seals are another major source of commercial water damage. Water can sneak into the structure through damaged or improperly sealed windows. Excess moisture, if not treated quickly, would cause mold, wood damage, and other issues.

To avoid this, make sure the windows aren't broken and that the seals aren't broken.

 5. Natural Disasters

Nature can take its toll even when you’ve done everything right. Violet storms, tornadoes, and others can strike without warning in a variety of ways, damaging part of your property and allowing water to get into the building.

6. Problems with the HVAC System

HVAC systems work to cool or heat the air through a series of pipes. These pipes and ducts can wear out and become damaged over time, resulting in leaks. To avoid water damage, the HVAC system should be cleaned regularly, and any excess water in the compression tanks should be removed.

7. Damaged Sprinkler system

Commercial premises are required by law to have fire alarms and sprinkler systems installed in their buildings for fire protection. The sprinkler system is supposed to be triggered by excess heat or fire. However, the sprinkler system can malfunction, resulting in water damage.

In the Event of Water Damage, Hire a Professional

It’s possible to do everything right and still end up with commercial water damage. Your approach to it, however, will determine how bad things get.

SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East Outlines the Steps to Take After Experiencing Storm Damage.

5/5/2022 (Permalink)

Knowing what to do after a storm can make all the difference in how things turn out. Everything from your carpets to furnishings, your insurance claim, and your vehicles could be affected, and if you don't act promptly, your property structure and belongings could be at stake.

The professionals at SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East have outlined the steps to take after storm damage to minimize losses and save you money.

1. Safety First

Whether your home was flooded, wind-damaged, or struck by lightning, the result can be extremely dangerous. Depending on the level of damage, you're at risk from live electrical lines, mold, insects, pests, and rain entering through the open sections of your home.

It's a good idea to leave your home until you can assess the damage. Until you can get a water damage professional or inspector to your house, consider going to see friends and relatives, or staying in a hotel or emergency shelter.

2. Examine the Damage and Photograph it

When the storm has passed and it is safe to go outdoors, take out your camera or use your smartphone to take pictures and make videos of the damage.

Take note of any potential issues like mold and exposed power wires that are collapsing drywall. Always remember to stay safe. It's not worth endangering your life for images that you can take at a later, safer time, especially if the water is high or there are fallen power lines around.

If you're worried about another storm hitting your property, always take photos before the storm.

3. Get in Touch with Your Insurance Provider

If your home or car was damaged by the storm, it’s important to promptly inform your insurance agency. An agent will help with answering questions regarding your claims and determining whether or not the damage is covered by your policy.

It is recommended that you file a claim within the first 24 hours after the storm using images and videos showcasing the damage to your home.

The longer you wait, the further back you will likely be in line, slowing down processing and repairs. If you wait too long, you risk causing more harm to your home.

4. Hire Storm and Water damage Restoration Services

Waiting for your insurance policy provider to complete processing and approve your claim before making any efforts to repair your home is a waste of time and could lead to more damage.

Engage the services of a local repair company as soon as you submit the claim to your insurance provider.

The restoration company will help assist with the insurance claim procedure to ensure that the repair costs are fairly covered by insurance. Depending on the damage to your home, you may need to hire a roofer, siding installer, or others.

For every day you leave water-impacted items unattended, the more they get damaged. The best thing you can do after filing an insurance claim is to get the services of a storm damage restoration company like SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East. These professionals are skilled and highly experienced at cleaning up after storms and can help you restore your property to its original state. They have specialized equipment to clean your home and clean and dry all absorbent materials like furniture, carpets, and others that have been polluted by floodwater.

Heavy Rain Storm Left Odor In My Business

4/28/2022 (Permalink)

The water damage from a heavy rain storm in your Corpus Christi East business often comes with odors and mold growth that can be hard to find. If you suspect you have mold but don't see any growth, we recommend finding an industrial hygienist who can find out what mold may or may not be in your home. Other measures you can take to help with the funk are below:

Air It Out

Open all doors and windows to allow air to circulate in your residence. This should help dissipate any lingering smells that remain and will also facilitate the drying of the affected areas.

Dry the Wet Areas

You may install dehumidifiers to speed up the drying process. Removing moisture from porous and absorbent surfaces such as carpet and upholstery can greatly reduce the chance of foul aromas remaining after the flood and can mitigate the appearance of mold.

Deodorize Your Business

There are natural methods that you can utilize to expedite the deodorizing process in your house. Baking soda sprinkled into carpets or other absorbent surfaces can be vacuumed up, greatly with getting rid of foul odors. On less porous surfaces, vinegar applied liberally can aid in combating persistent smells.

Keep an Eye Out for Mold

As with any area that has had prolonged exposure to moisture, mold growth can be a threat that, if not addressed immediately can become a huge problem. It is imperative that proper steps are taken to ensure that mold and spores do not have the opportunity to spread in your home.

Sewage

Sewage loss can lead to your home being contaminated by sewage contents when floodwater finds its way past your threshold. This can leave behind an overpowering smell even after the moisture has been removed due to the bacteria in the water. These horrendous smells often cannot be removed by household cleaners and require the services of a professional flood restoration company.

Eliminating odors can be a tricky thing, so give us a call at (361) 985-6444 and leave the restoration to us!

Preparing for Tornadoes | SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East

4/7/2022 (Permalink)

We have seen an influx in tornadoes in the southern region lately. It is always good to be prepared when dealing with storms that could potentionally turn into a tornado.

Prepare:

  • Know the signs of a tornado, including a rotating funnel-shaped cloud, an approaching cloud of debris, or a loud roar similar to a freight train.
  • Sign up for your community’s warning system. The Emergency Alert System (EAS) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Weather Radio also provide emergency alerts. Become familiar with your community's sirens.
  • Pay attention to weather reports. Meteorologists can predict when conditions might be right for a tornado.
  • Identify and practice going to a safe shelter for high winds, such as a safe room built using FEMA criteria or a storm shelter built to ICC 500 standards. The next best protection is a small, interior, windowless room in a sturdy building on the lowest level.

Survive:

  • Immediately go to a safe location that you identified.
  • Take additional cover by shielding your head and neck with your arms and putting materials such as furniture and blankets around you.
  • Do not try to outrun a tornado in a vehicle.
  • If you are in a car or outdoors and cannot get to a building, cover your head and neck with your arms and cover your body with a coat or blanket, if possible.

Recover:

  • If you are trapped, cover your mouth with a cloth or mask to avoid breathing dust. Try to send a text, bang on a pipe or wall, or use a whistle instead of shouting.
  • Stay clear of fallen power lines or broken utility lines.
  • Do not enter damaged buildings until you are told that they are safe.
  • Save your phone calls for emergencies. Phone systems are often down or busy after a disaster. Use text messaging or social media to communicate with family and friends.
  • Be careful during clean-up. Wear thick-soled shoes, long pants, and work gloves.

In the event your home or business is damaged by a tornado or high winds, SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East is available 24/7/365 to assist in securing your property.

Our reconstruction team is experienced in restoring properties from this type of damage, working in conjunction with your insurance company to bring your home or business back to life. Call us today at (361) 985-6444!

How Water Damage Affects Homes and the Importance of Professional Water Damage Restoration

4/5/2022 (Permalink)

Blog Summary: SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East details the effects of hidden water damage on residential homes and the importance of contacting a water damage restoration for professional cleanup and repair before further damage occurs.

Causes of Hidden Water Leaks

Water leaks in a home are damaging and potentially dangerous, and hidden leaks are even more so. Learn how to spot hidden water leaks, including the most likely spots to find them, appreciate the dangers of hidden water leaks, and why professional water damage restoration is vital to preserving and protecting the home.

All plumbing pipes and systems age over time due to regular wear and tear and the effects of the environment. Other reasons water pipes may start to leak include:

  • High Water Pressure: Water pipes and systems have a maximum pressure they can handle before seams and weakened areas of the piping burst. Clogs, constrictions in the pipe, or miscalibrated pressure regulators can cause high water pressure.
  • Corrosion: Water pipes and connectors are often metal. Though treated with anticorrosive treatments, these metals will wear over time, leading to cracks, holes, or loosened connections.
  • Freezing Temperatures: Extreme cold temperatures can cause water to freeze in the pipes, leading to possible breaks. It can also increase small leaks, expanding any cracks when the ice forms.
  • Damage or Improper Installation: Inexperienced technicians can damage pipes repairs on other systems in the home, such as electrical wiring or ductwork. Leaks could also result from poorly installed or repaired pipes or connectors.

Dangers of Hidden Water Leaks

Hidden water leaks can result in real danger for a home and its residents. Structural damage is the most apparent effect and may be severe by the time it is detectable.

Weakened floors could collapse, leading to expensive water damage and potential injury. There are also risks of exposure to:

  •  Mold spores and mildew
  •  Asbestos and fiberglass insulation
  •  Infestations of insects and vermin

The Importance of Professional Water Damage Restoration

Professional water damage restoration and mold remediation are critical, especially in situations where hidden water leaks cause extensive damage that may not be visible. A professional restoration company has training and experience assessing and restoring residential and commercial properties, so they can spot the signs of hidden water leaks quickly.

Why Professional Water Damage Restoration Is Essential After a Water Ingress

4/5/2022 (Permalink)

Blog Summary: Water damage restoration company SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East discusses the importance of a fast response after a water infiltration and provides a step-by-step breakdown of the remediation process.

What Happens When Water Comes in Contact with Electrical Wiring?

An electrical system is a complex assemblage of switches, circuits, plugs, and wires. Only licensed, professional electricians should inspect, maintain, or repair electrical wiring.

Water seeps into electrical wiring through damaged wire insulation, causing the wiring to degrade over time. Corroded electrical wires are a fire hazard, especially if water is present. Once water penetrates an electrical system, it will require professional water damage restoration services to restore function.

Signs Of Water Damage to Electrical Wiring

In most homes, electricians install electrical wiring behind walls and ceilings. Because the wiring is concealed, the signs of water damage are difficult to detect at the onset. There are some warning signs associated with water damage to electrical wiring.

If you experience any of the following, turn off the electrical power at the source and call an electrician:

Buzzing or humming sounds coming from light fixtures, switches, or outlets

  • Circuit breaker tripping repeatedly
  • Any plugged-in, submerged electrical device
  • Water running out of a light fixture or switch or down the wall
  • A plug outlet that has water running in or out
  • A burst water pipe or flood

Water Damage Restoration and Repair

Water infiltration presents serious consequences, and water damage restoration is a vital component of recovery after a flood.

Water damage restoration should start within 48 hours to prevent long-term damage and potential health risks associated with standing water. If left untreated, still water becomes contaminated and leads to mold growth and further damage.

Water damage and mold remediation protocols to repair and restore water damaged property include:

  • Inspect and assess to determine the degree of damage and moisture penetration
  • Remove water using a professional-grade vacuum and pump to extract floodwater from the premises quickly
  • Dry and dehumidify the remaining moisture with specialized equipment
  • Clean, sanitize, and deodorize all salvageable furniture and structures
  • Restore property and items to a pre-damage condition

Depending on the extent of the damage, the restoration process may include repairs such as replacing carpeting and drywall, or reconstruction of certain areas of the property, including electrical wiring

How to Prevent Mold Growth

Preventing mold growth after a water event requires rapid measures by a professional water damage restoration company. Moisture fosters mold growth. Addressing the water damage immediately drastically reduces the likelihood of mold growth.

Not all mold is life-threatening. However, some types of molds produce health effects.

Mold scenarios vary and require a process of remediation. SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East is a licensed mold remediation company with dedicated mold removal technicians on staff.

Find Out Why Insulation Requires Professional Water Damage Restoration After Water Infiltration

4/5/2022 (Permalink)

Blog Summary: SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East explains the water damage restoration protocols to dry out water-soaked insulation and the necessary steps to prevent further damage.

Find Out Why Insulation Requires Professional Water Damage Restoration After Water Infiltration

Insulation is crucial for maintaining comfortable and healthy indoor air quality, but it must remain intact, uncompressed, and dry to function. Insulation is highly susceptible to water damage and often is the first casualty of a leaky roof or burst pipe.

When left untreated, water-damaged insulation causes a host of costly repairs and potential health risks. It is crucial to call a professional water damage restoration company at the first sign of moisture penetration.

The Importance of Keeping Insulation Dry

Damaged insulation compromises the home’s ability to retain heat and causes an increase in energy consumption. Moisture causes the insulation to deteriorate, and the extra weight of wet insulation damages pipes. The worst-case scenario is CUI (corrosion under insulation) — the erosion of the piping system.

How Does Insulation Get Wet?

The most common source of moisture in insulation is a leaky roof. Further causes of water-damaged insulation include:

  • Humidity
  • Plumbing issues such as leaks
  • Condensation dripping from cold service devices
  • Snow and rain blowing in through air vents
  • Ground moisture and flooding

What Happens to Wet Insulation?

Damp insulation loses its functionality, specifically its ability to inhibit heat transfer. Depending on the type of material, the wet insulation loses its thermal protective value by up to 40%.

Mold growth on wet insulation is cause for concern – it starts to grow within 24 to 48 hours. All types of insulation materials are susceptible to mold when exposed to moisture. Mold can spread to drywall, ceilings, and wood, rotting those surfaces over time. Some molds produce dangerous airborne toxins, posing a substantial health risk.

Since every mold scenario is different, mold removal is a crucial part of the water damage restoration process. SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East is a licensed mold remediation company with a dedicated mold remediation expert on staff.

How to Treat Wet Insulation

With the aid of a professional water damage restoration service, it may be possible to salvage water-soaked insulation with special water removal machinery and mold remediation. Simply killing the mold growth does not eliminate the problem, as even dead mold has toxic properties.

A certified water damage restoration crew has the equipment and expertise to eradicate mold from your property by taking the following steps:

  • Water removal with an industrial-grade vacuum to quickly remove excess water
  • Dry and dehumidify the space using specialized equipment and repair the source of the water infiltration
  • Thoroughly sanitize and deodorize all salvageable items, furniture, structures, and material
  • Mold remediation, including removal of compromised building materials, applying fresh paint, disinfecting (or replacing) carpeting
  • Restoring items to their pre-damaged condition wherever possible

It may be possible to restore insulation to its original state by applying antimicrobial agents. SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East recommends a follow-up inspection of the premises to confirm a successful elimination of mold and bacteria.

Cleaning Water-Damaged Carpets in Corpus Christi Office Buildings

3/21/2022 (Permalink)

Whether a leak from a plumbing fixture or a malfunctioning fire suppression system, water damage in your office building can be destructive to installed materials like carpeting. Our SERVPRO team can help with mitigation and restoration solutions.

Removing Trapped Moisture in Exposed Elements?

Much of the success to be expected during water damage restoration of Corpus Christi East offices comes from removing water in low-pile carpeting. The less saturated and deteriorated this carpeting becomes, the easier it is to extract the moisture and dry the fibers to continue using this flooring. Some of the tools designed for removing water from carpets include:

  • Carpet wands
  • Weighted extractors
  • Drying mats
  • Wet vacuums

Removing the water is often not enough to overcome the damage that burst pipes or flooding can cause exposed flooring. Our carpet cleaning technicians prepare effective cleaning options for glue-down low pile carpeting like hot water extraction. This approach improves the look and feel of carpeting in the damaged space and makes the damage effects "Like it never even happened."

Pulling Up Carpet and Reinstalling

When drying and extraction are not effective for restoring installed carpeting throughout the office, we lean on our general contractor license to provide controlled demolition solutions. Carpet can be pulled up from the tack strips and discarded, leaving a clean space for new flooring to be installed to the property management's wishes.

Water damage in an office space can impact many structural elements and contents. The fast response of our SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East ensures that our mitigation efforts begin as soon as possible. Should You Inspect Your Roof After a Thunderstorm?

1/27/2022 (Permalink)

The thunderstorms down south are on another level compared to many areas of the United States. After a thunderstorm, you might be concerned about damage to your home and especially your roof. After a storm, here are some tips for inspecting your roof for water damage so you can get it fixed before the next storm.

Check For Leaks

The obvious way to know if you have roof damage is if there is water leaking into your home. Look along the seams where the wall meets the ceiling, corners of rooms, and in the attic for any kind of moisture or dampness. If you find any, you will know where to make repairs and can help to mitigate to prevent further damage.

Check Your Roof

If you don't see any internal damage, you should try to get up on your roof and check for any missing shingles, cracks, or other damages. Carefully go over each section to find any kind of wind or water damage. Make sure any seals around grates, vents, or windows are intact and have not weathered.

How To Use Your Garden Hose To Check

The most thorough test you can do for your roof to ensure there are no leaks is to test it out by simulating heavy rain conditions. With someone inside watching for leaks, pour water from the garden hose over sections of your roof to look for leaks. You can also do this to make sure your gutters are properly draining. This test will give you a firsthand look at how water is draining off your roof and let you know of any repairs that need to be made.

If you do find any damage to your home or roof, immediately contact your home insurance provider and make sure to document any damage with pictures so that you can get a claim submitted for repair costs. Our team is on standby 24/7 to help mitigate any issues. We also have a phenomenal construction team that can help with roof repairs!

How House Fires Start | SERVPRO® of Corpus Christi East

No one wants to see their home caught in a blazing, unpredictable fire. We all try every day to make wise decisions to help prevent this from happening.

However, despite an increased awareness of fire safety, more than a quarter of all reported fires still occur in the home.

Let’s work together in getting that number down by recognizing and staying aware of the top causes of house fires.

Cooking. Cooking is the leading cause of house fires and injuries, with unattended cooking primarily to blame. The best thing you can do to help prevent a fire is to stay in the kitchen while preparing food.

Heating equipment. Heating implements like portable space heaters are another main culprit in helping cause house fires. There can be a combination of things that can cause this, including mishaps and malfunctions. Placing heaters too close to something flammable is also a leading culprit in fires.

Electrical fires. Faulty wiring or a higher usage of electricity (especially in older homes) can also contribute to house fires. Something as simple as placing a higher wattage bulb into a lamp that requires low wattage or having frayed wiring can increase the risk of a house fire.

Intentional fires. According to the National Fire Protection Association, arson is the leading cause of fire property damage in the United States. That means someone purposefully set a fire intent on destruction, rather than a fire set for other reasons that simply got out of hand.

Smoking materials. This particular risk is only responsible for 5% of house fire occurrences, but it’s the leading cause of civilian fire deaths. These fires are particularly deadly because they often occur when someone who is smoking falls asleep.

Regardless of the cause, SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East is here for you if your home is affected by fire. Contact your local team today to see how we can help.

How To Clean Build-Up In Your Corpus Christi Home's Gutters After a Storm

1/18/2022 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East knows that we get our fair share of sunny days throughout the year, however, it also brings the occasional rainstorm. Our rainstorms are often accompanied by heavy wind and very strong rain. By dumping a high volume of water in a relatively short amount of time, it’s important to take precautionary measures to prevent building that can affect your drain pipes.

One measure you can take is cleaning out your home’s gutters and storm drains after a storm hits, and you can do it in three easy steps:

First, start by scooping out debris. Find a ladder and securely place it against your home so you are able to reach the gutters comfortably. Start at the end closest to the drain outlet and gradually work your way to the other end, removing loose debris as you go.

Second, use a hose to spray a steady stream of water through the gutters towards the drain outlet. This will help remove any stubborn dirt and debris that may still be holding on from when you were scooping.

Third, be sure to check your drain pipes for any blockage. In some instances, rainstorms can force material into the pipes, causing potentially severe damage. A good way to detect if your drain pipes are blocked is if you see a trickle of water rather than a flow coming from them. If this is the case, try using a hose at the top of the gutter and spray directly into the outlet to help clear any congestion.

Following these steps will help prevent your gutters and storm drains from taking on damage from blockage and build-up. If you experience any major damage like indoor flooding give SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East a call at (361) 985-6444 and our experts will be there to help you resolve and repair the issue!

What To Do After Your Toilet Overflows

1/17/2022 (Permalink)

When a toilet becomes blocked, it can usually be taken care of with a plunger. However, when a flooded toilet is the result of sewer damage, the situation can quickly get out of control.

If you experience a toilet overflow that causes sewer water to flood your bathroom or worse, multiple rooms, do not attempt to clean it up yourself. Raw sewage contains bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens that pose a serious threat to humans and animals. If a sewer backs up into your home, follow these basic steps to handle the situation quickly and safely:

1. Avoid All Contact With the Water

You might be tempted to try to move possessions that have already come in contact with the sewer water, but don’t. The most important thing is keeping you and your family safe and that means avoiding all contact with the water.

2. Shut Off Electricity and Gas If Necessary

If sewer water comes in contact with electrical outlets or gas appliances, it can create a hazardous situation. Shut off your electricity and contact your gas company to turn off the gas until the situation is dealt with.

3. Contact Your Utility Company

The location of the sewer damage determines who is responsible for repairs. Contact your sewage company to alert them to the situation and find out what they know. If it turns out the problem is on your property, you may be responsible for hiring a plumber to fix it.

4. Call a Water Damage Mitigation Specialist

Cleaning up sewage requires protective clothing, specialized equipment, and knowledge about how to avoid spreading contamination to other parts of your property. SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East is an experienced water damage and mitigation company that has all of these things and can return your home to normal quickly and efficiently.

1/5/2022 (Permalink)

Properly insulating pipes is the best way to prevent frozen pipes. Dropping temperatures and wind can freeze water inside pipes causing the pipe to burst.

  1. Seal cracks and gaps

Keeping cold air out and warm air in helps to make your home or commercial building more energy efficient and reduces the risk of frozen pipes.  Use caulk, sealants, and weather stripping to seal cracks, gaps and holes in your buildings exterior and foundation.

  1. Keep heat at sufficient levels

Keep the thermostat above 50 degrees, even if the building is vacant is crucial. Nighttime temperatures can be significantly colder than daytime temperatures. These differences in temperature increase the risk of freezing pipes.

If your Corpus Christi East hotel has mold damage, you should hire a restoration company. SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East can help eliminate any growth so your guests can have a clean and comfortable stay.

When you notice the signs of a mold present in your hotel, it is vital to seek assistance from professionals. Although mold treatment devices and cleaners are available in hardware stores, you cannot be sure which ones are effective. Additionally, you do not want to expose yourself to mold unnecessarily. Professionals have proper training and advanced mold remediation products and equipment.

What causes mold to grow?

Mold enters a building as tiny spores that need moisture, nutrients, favorable temperatures, and oxygen to start growing, digesting, and destroying. Molds grow best in areas with lots of moisture or humidity. Mold can grow on many surfaces, including:

  • Ceiling tiles
  • Wood
  • Paint
  • Wallpaper
  • Sheetrock
  • Carpet
  • Insulation

What does mold remediation involve?

Mold remediation is the process of removing or cleaning up mold from an indoor environment. When removing mold, it is vital to understand that when you disturb it, its spores can get into other areas of the building, creating new mold problems. Before we remove the mold, we can build a containment using negative pressure. We also wear the right personal protective equipment and follow the stipulations of the IICRC with regards to mold removal.

Our team can eliminate the mold by physically removing the affected porous materials and drying the environment effectively. We can also use disinfectants to remove some molds. Direct contact between certain molds and some disinfectants inhibits or slows mold growth.

If you need to remove mold from your hotel, call SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East. Our staff is certified in mold remediation and mold removal by the IICRC.

How To Know Which Smoke Detector To Choose For Your Home

11/16/2021 (Permalink)

A house fire can be devastating to you and your family. It can rapidly destroy everything in your home. Having the right smoke alarm can save your life. Unfortunately, with so many types on the market, it can be difficult to choose the perfect one for you and your home. Here are a few things that you need to consider before purchasing one.

Types of Smoke Detector There are multiple types of fire alarms. Each type detects smoke in different ways. The types are:

  • Air-sampling
  • Photoelectric
  • Ionization
  • Dual sensor

Each works in a different way. For example, an ionization smoke detector uses small amounts of radioactive particles to sense smoke in the air around it. A photoelectric alarm uses light to detect smoke and a dual-sensor alarm does both.

The Size of Your House The size of your home will not only determine the amount of smoke alarms you need to install, it will also tell you where to place them.
The best rule of thumb is to have a smoke alarm in each room but this is not always practical. At the very minimum, a smoke alarm should be installed in each room that a fire is more likely to start and bedrooms.

Batteries Vs Hardwiring Some fire detection devices are powered by batteries while others are wired into your home electrical system. Although it is more expensive to have it hardwired in, it is a good idea if you are bad at changing batteries. When a battery gets low your smoke detector may not work.

SERPVPRO Tip: Reach out to your local firefighters, they often provide free smoke alarms and instillation.

Smoke alarms may not save your home, but chances are they will save the lives inside. If your home is damaged by fire call a fire damage remediation company in Corpus Christi East.

Reasons Why it is Vital to use Fire Cleaning Professionals

11/15/2021 (Permalink)

Fires can happen unexpectedly at any time. Some people are unprepared on what to do for the clean up after the fire occurs, which is why it is vital to hire fire damage servicing company to help get it done correctly.

  • There are four main reasons on why it is vital to hire a fire damage service professional.
  • Unforeseen damages – With the unforeseen damages in the home, it is a possibility that it is no longer safe to live in.
  • Smoke and soot. – Soot can cover a lot of things in the home and it is very difficult to remove. Smoke has a bad tendency to linger for years and many people don’t realize it’s there. There are many places that smoke can get into besides the obvious like the carpet and furniture. It can be in the walls or air ducts. This sometimes makes the air in the home unhealthy to breathe, especially for children and elderly.
  • Right equipment – Many people may try to clean the damages themselves but don’t have the right equipment to do so. Hiring a cleanup service will allow the homeowners to save time and assurance that the home is well taken care of.
  • Structural damage – There can be structural damage from fire or the water used to put out the fire.  It can lead to big problems in the future if it is not taken care of immediately.

Don’t delay the cleanup process, the sooner the cleanup gets started, the less damage repair will need to be done.  If you have any questions, feel free to contact SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East.

How To Create a Fire Escape Plan

11/4/2021 (Permalink)

We often think that disasters won't happen to us, even though disasters can happen to anyone! We will neglect planning because we have convinced ourselves we are safe from disaster. If this sounds like you, you are not alone. Ensuring your family has a plan reduces the risk of injury and death. If you need help coming up with a plan, contact your local fire department or fire remediation company.

A fire escape plan is a crucial part of family safety. Follow the steps above to create and practice your ideal plan.

1. Multiple Exits

You never know where a fire will start or how it will spread. If you only have two exits from your home, you up the chances you will become trapped.

An effective escape plan requires a minimum of two exits PER room. You do not have to get overly creative here. A window and a door are good escape routes; just make sure that every space in the home has a minimum of two ways out, including hallways.

2. Escape Routes Must Remain Clear

As you design your escape routes, remember the paths need to remain clear. Do not place bookshelves in front of windows or couches in the direct line to the front door.

3. Communication

When you come up with an escape plan, please do not shy away from talking about it. Quiz your kids on the routes out of their rooms and the house. Ask your spouse to explain to your children how to make quick choices during a fire. By having conversations, even repetitive ones, you ensure your escape strategy remains a priority in the minds of your family.

4. Practice, Practice, Practice!

Similarly, the physical practice is crucial to developing muscle memory. In a genuine emergency, your brain can freeze, wasting the few precious moments you have to escape a fire. By practicing at least once per month, you ensure your family knows how to get out of the house.

Preparing Your Corpus Christi Home For Fall

9/24/2021 (Permalink)

When the seasons change it is a perfect opportunity to do a deep dive into your home to make sure everything is in working order and clean. Keep reading to find out some fall home tips!

1. Perform a pantry audit.

First, remove all the cans and boxes from the shelves, and vacuum away any lingering dust or crumbs (a lot can build up in just a few months!). Then, inspect each item before putting it back in its place, tossing anything that is expired or past its prime.

2. Test and clean your smoke detectors.

You already know to put fresh batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. But you also need to clean your units, since dust that accumulates can cause them to underperform. Using your vacuum cleaner's soft brush attachment, clean in and around the detectors' openings. If any are more than 10 years old, replace them.

  3. Flip your mattress.

When you turn back your clocks, turn your mattress over, too. If you can't flip it because it has a pillowtop, rotate it 180 degrees to prevent body impressions form causing certain spots to slump. Sprinkle the mattress with baking soda to neutralize odors, and then vacuum it up.

4. Shampoo your carpet.

Get a jump on holiday party season by giving your carpeting a good scrub. We recommend getting a professional cleaning once a year, but you can also do a good job by using a DIY method.

Commercial Mold Containment with SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East

8/30/2021 (Permalink)

When your Corpus Christi East business faces mold contamination, our professionals are here to help! We have a very specific process to contain the mold from spreading to other areas of your business to protect it. Here are some things you might want to know about our containment!

Containment is important because mold can very easily spread. When there is mold present often times we need to remove drywall and flooring, and the mold spores can travel through the air. The containment will keep any rogue spores in the area that is already affected.

Containment prevents further mold contamination, by creating a barrier between the affected area and the rest of your home. In most cases, this is achieved by the use of plastic sheeting which should block the space from the rest of the home and sealing off air vents, Our team will also set up a fan that exhausts outside the home to create a negative pressure zone which should prevent mold from becoming airborne.

While working in the contained area, our professionals will wear protective safety gear to help prevent tracking spores outside of containment. This may include clothing and shoe covered where are only worn in the workspace and then are removed before going anywhere else.

If you suspect you have a mold problem, give SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East a call!

Your Generator Maintenance Guide | SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East

8/10/2021 (Permalink)

Typical Standby Generator Maintenance

With the crazy weather patterns in Corpus Christi the past year, it is important to be prepared in the event of another disaster. We recommend having a generator handy in the event the storm impacts last days on end. In order to ensure your generator is functioning properly take these maintenance tips into consideration.

The typical life expectancy for a generator is between 20,000 and 30,000 hours, serving a crucial role while waiting for a storm restoration company to come to your business.

Weekly
You are going to need to perform small maintenance tasks every week. These include:

  • Running the engine
  • Checking for alarms or warnings
  • Ensuring adequate fuel levels for an emergency
  • Setting the engine to auto mode
  • Checking that the circuit breaker is closed
  • Ensuring there are no leaks

Monthly
On a monthly basis, you will need to spend more time checking fluid levels, such as the coolant and oil. You should also check the battery to ensure you are ready for a disaster.

Bi-Annual
You are going to want to check the thermal protection levels every six months. At the same time, inspect the drive belts to ensure they have the proper tension and are in good condition.

Annual
A certified technician will need to come out every year and perform crucial tasks, such as changing the engine oil, fuel filter, air filter, and spark plugs. If any extra maintenance is needed, like a coolant system flush, your technician will perform these items at your annual service.

Taking precautions like this can have many benefits for your home or business. The primary one is that you put off replacing your equipment longer. If you are looking to push the maximum number of hours and avoid generator problems, you need to consider required preventative maintenance.

For any storm related damage, call the storm professionals at (361) 985-6444.

The last thing you want is guests writing bad reviews because of water issues.

How Do You Restore Carpeting After Water Damage?

More than just your carpets get impacted by water intrusion in your hotel. Hallways, staircases, and wooden structures such as the service desk can be damaged. Water restoration in Corpus Christi East involving carpets begins with the right water extraction process. The proper extraction tools can remove water faster than drying alone. SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East has trained water restoration technicians (WRT) who precisely know what is needed to restore your carpets.

Stationary Extraction Tools

While moving extraction tools help certain types of materials, they are not always the best thing for plush carpets. Stationary extraction methods involve using the technician's weight to apply downward pressure and push the water to the surface. The water then gets pulled through a vacuum system attached to the device. Our largest stationary units can cover 200 square inches at one time. Other extraction methods our WRT techs can use include:

  • Portable or truck-mounted units
  • Carpet wands
  • Self-propelled extraction tools

Once the water gets extracted from your carpet and padding, the drying process begins. We use industrial-strength air movers and dehumidifiers in the correct ratio for optimum drying power. Our teams work quickly and efficiently to get the job done. You want to get back to business as soon as possible, and we want that too.

For any commercial water damage needs, SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East is here with a team of trained professionals; We're Faster To Any Size Disaster. Contact SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East at (361) 985-6444 for expert water restoration service.

Reducing Fire Risks in Your Corpus Christi East Office

6/9/2021 (Permalink)

Offices across the United States suffer from fires more often than you think. In fact, every year in the US 17,000 office and stores have fires that result in $800 million in damages. A fire in the workplace is devastating to not only employees but also the business owner. Depending on how large the fire is if you are not prepared the likelihood of recovering can lower. Educating employees on common fire risks and ensuring they follow protocol can help minimize fires.

Damaged Power Cords

Because offices are jampacked with computers, phones, printers, kitchen appliances, and more, over time the electrical system can become overwhelmed. This can cause electrical shock which can result in a spark or fire starting. To avoid this from happening, check on your electrical panels regularly and make sure no wires are corroded.

Dust

If your office is not regularly being cleaned, dust is accumulating. When dust builds up on wood, metal, and plastic it can become a fire hazard. Items that heat up such as computers, microwaves, and wires should always be kept dust-free.

Combustible Materials

Offices often have many papers, boxes, furnishing, and packaging lying around. All of these items can cause a fire to spread quicker than normal. Although many items are important to the daily functions of the office, try to keep it as tidy and minimal as possible. Fireproof furniture and desks should also be considered for the purposes of limiting what gets damaged and how fast the fire spreads.

Computers

Most offices have one computer per employee. Depending on how many employees you have, those can all be fire hazards. Employees should ensure they are not letting their computers overheat, or leaving laptops on materials that can catch fire if the laptop heats up too much. All employees should shut down their computers daily, and especially on the weekend.

After learning of all the fire hazards present in offices, it is important to have a plan. SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East offers an Emergency Ready Profile which allows for us to start mitigation sooner to get you back into your building quicker. Call us today to get one!

3 Things You Should Not Do After a Flood in Your Corpus Christi East Home

5/4/2021 (Permalink)

When dealing with floodwater, many homeowners are tempted to put themselves or their families at risk in an effort to save their home or their possessions. These are three things you should not do after a flood.

Don't Stay in Your Home
After a flood, there is not much you can do to prevent damage by staying. If you have time, you can place sandbags, move possessions to higher ground, board up windows and take other precautions, but once flooding is imminent, it is best to evacuate to a shelter. Attempting to remain in your home puts you at risk of drowning, electrocution, and contact with contaminants in the water. It also puts the emergency workers who will have to assist you if you get in trouble at risk.

Don't Rely on Do-It-Yourself Solutions
You may be able to repair the water damage from a minor flood yourself, but when major flooding occurs, by the time it is safe to re-enter buildings, the damage is usually too severe for most do-it-yourself attempts to be successful. Have a plan in place to deal with the floodwater. Contact your insurance company. Don't count on being able to obtain equipment, such as generators, protective gear, and pumps, that you would need to attempt to dry out your property yourself.

Don't Walk or Drive Through Standing Water Downed power lines can electrify standing water, posing an electrocution risk. As little as six inches of water can damage your car and cause traction issues. Flood water poses significant risks to homeowners attempting to salvage their property after a flood. It is best to let your insurance company and restoration professionals take the lead and avoid putting yourself at risk, in most cases.

Simple Ways to Be Green! | SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East

4/26/2021 (Permalink)

Climate change has a large impact on many aspects of our lives, including damage to our homes, more expensive home insurance, unbearable outside working conditions, higher electric bills, allergies and health risks, poor water quality, and more! We have listed ways easy ways to become “greener” and help our beautiful planet.

  • Use your diet to help climate change. Try participating in meatless Mondays.
  • Try a foodprint calculator to find out exactly how your meals impact the planet.
  • It’s time to start plogging aka picking up trash while jogging! This is a fun and effective way to get a workout in while cleaning the community.
  • Change your paper bills to online billing.
  • Convince your school district or office building to choose reusable utensils, trays, and dishes in the cafeteria.
  • Help protect pollinators by going pesticide-free! We need pollinators to ensure the persistence of our crop yields and ensure healthy sustainable ecosystems now and in the future.
  • Buy organic food to keep your body and the environment free of toxic pesticides
  • Buy local food to reduce the distance from farm to fork. Buy straight from the farm, frequent your local farmers’ market, or join a local food co-op.
  • Use a reusable water bottle to make a big impact on your plastic consumption.
  • Avoid single-use plastic items, and if possible, buy products in glass or paper. Glass products are easily reused, and paper is a much friendlier product to the environment.
  • Donate your old clothes and home goods instead of throwing them out. When you need something, consider buying used items.
  • Always read labels! Use environmentally friendly, non-toxic cleaning products to avoid washing toxic chemicals down the drain!
  • Take a shorter shower and use a water-saving shower head.
  • Save electricity and turn off lights when you leave the room.
  • Use long-lasting light bulbs and flip the light switch off when you leave the room.
  • Bike more. Drive less.
  • Use cloth towels instead of paper towels.
  • Stop idling in your car.
  • Invest in a rainwater collection system. There's so much you can use this non-drinking water for — like cleaning or watering plants.
  • Take the steps instead of the elevator.
  • Use paper, metal, or glass straws instead of plastic straws.
  • Unsubscribe from junk mail.
  • Make your yard creature friendly with bird feeders, birdhouses, and birdbaths.

Here are SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East, we do everything we can to be environmentally friendly and help save the planet. Let us know how you plan to pledge to be greener this Earth Day and every day!

Why You Need to Address Your Corpus Christi East Home Water Damage Right Away

4/21/2021 (Permalink)

Water Damage is extremely serious and needs to be addressed immediately in your Corpus Christi home. Within minutes, water can spread through your property and saturate everything. This includes walls, floors, upholstery, books, documents, and pictures.

Within 1 to 24 hours your drywall will begin to swell and break down, a musty odor will appear, and metal surfaces will tarnish. Between 48 hours to 1 week, mold will grow and spread, paint will blister, metal will corrode, and doors will begin to warp. After one week the damage will be so serious that the cost and time to restore your home will be astronomical, and the structural safety of the home will pose risks to those who live there.

Because water damage is not uncommon in the Corpus Christi area it is important to familiarize yourself with the below steps on how to mitigate water damage in your home.

  1. Turn off the electricity to prevent electrical problems.
  2. Address the source of the water and stop it from flooding your home.
  3. Remove standing water with specialized pumps or vacuums, but you can also do this manually.
  4. Dry out the remaining water with fans and dehumidifiers to speed the drying process.
  5. Sanitize affected items based on what type of water it came into contact with.
  6. Restore items that can be salvaged and replace damaged items to prevent contamination and mold growth.

If the damage is too large for you to handle on your own, know that your local SERVPRO® of Corpus Christi East is available 24/7 to restore your home, personal belongings, and give you back your peace of mind.

3/29/2021 (Permalink)

Tips to prevent mold from growing in your closets

Mold can grow anywhere in homes, including closets. Here are some tips to keep your closets dry and mold-free!

  • Make sure that clothes are completely dry before storing them in closets. The moisture in clothing can accelerate mold growth.
  • Store only clean clothing and items in closets as dirt and other organic substances are potential food sources for mold.
  • Don’t pack clothes or other items too tightly in closets. Allow air to circulate between them to reduce moisture.
  • Don’t store items on the closet floor to prevent trapping moisture underneath them.
  • Leave closets open when possible. Replace solid closet doors curtains for better air flow.
  • Avoid opening closets if they are in rooms with high humidity, particularly when producing moisture (e.g., showering or cooking).
  • If you have a humidity problem in your home, use the air conditioning unit or a dehumidifier to remove excess moisture from the air.
  • If clothes in a closet smell musty, take them out and fix the moisture problem.

Don’t let mold take over! Call the pros at SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East!

Spring Water Conservation Tips Around Your Corpus Christi East Office

3/12/2021 (Permalink)

Clean water that is used for human consumption is a non-renewable resource. Keeping our waterways clean as well as conserving water where we can is important to especially during times of drought and during the spring and summer. Check out how to conserve water in your daily life, especially at work!

Indoor Tips

Bathroom

  • Replace your showerhead and toilet with a water-efficient model.
  • Get in the shower as soon as the water becomes warm enough and take short showers.
  • Turn off the water while you are shaving. Fill the sink with an inch of hot water instead of letting the water run continuously.
  • Check toilets for leaks.
  • Don’t waste water when brushing your teeth or washing your hands. Shut off the water until it’s time to rinse.

Kitchen

  • Run the dishwasher only when full. This practice will save water, energy, detergent, and money.
  • Install faucet aerators.
  • Dry scrape dishes instead of rinsing. Your dishwasher will take care of the rest.
  • Soak pans rather than scrubbing them with the water running. n

Laundry room

  • Wash only full loads.
  • Use the lowest water level setting on the washing machine for light or partial loads whenever possible.
  • Use cold water as often as possible to save energy and conserve hot water for uses that cold water cannot serve.
  • Conventional washing machines can use up to twice as many gallons of water per load compared to high-efficiency machines.

Outdoor Tips

  • Plant water-efficient, well-adapted, and/or native shrubs, trees, and grasses. Choose plants that are drought and heat tolerant and can survive the minimum winter temperatures in your area.
  • Don’t abuse the benefits of an automatic sprinkler system by over-watering. Set it to provide thorough but infrequent watering.
  • Check sprinkler heads regularly to make sure they are working properly.
  • Install rain shut-off devices and adjust sprinklers to eliminate coverage on the pavement.
  • Cover pools and spas. This can save the equivalent of your pool volume each year!
  • Harvest the rain. Buy a rain barrel or a cistern and collect the water from your gutters to water your plants.
  • Use your water efficiently.
  • Don’t waste water by cleaning patios or sidewalks with it; use a broom.
  • Taller grass holds moisture better. Don’t cut more than one-third of its length at one time.
  • Use lots of mulch around your shrubs and trees. It will retain moisture, reduce run-off, moderate soil temperatures, and help with weed control.

Let us know how these tips work for your home or business!

Leaky Windows? | SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East

1/28/2021 (Permalink)

What to Do if There Is a Water Leak Around a Window

The natural elements can wear down the integrity of a home. Over time, the homeowner may notice leakage around a window, which can possibly result in wood rot, mold and water damage. The longer the leak is left unaddressed, the more the repairs will cost.

Locate the Problem

Even a slow drip can mean that more water is sitting inside of the wall. Once a homeowner notices moisture trickling from a window when it rains, the first step is to carefully look at the wall around the area to find the source of the leak. However, thanks to gravity, appearances can be deceiving; liquid may pool in one place, but that place is not always the leak's origin.

Two common problem areas are the edge and the rubber seal. The gap between the edge and the surrounding wall is usually sealed with caulk. Eventually, the caulk dries out and begins to peel and chip. Like caulk, the rubber seal situated between the panes and frame can ultimately dry out, creating rips in the rubber.

Gauge the Severity of Damage

Depending on the severity of the damage, the window may need to be replaced. A replacement is usually warranted when decaying or softness is found on nearby surfaces. However, even if the surrounding surfaces seem to be structurally sound, the homeowner should not just re-caulk the gaps without getting an expert's opinion on the full extent of the damage.

SERVPRO® of Corpus Christi East Can Help!

A specialist at SERVPRO® of Corpus Christi East can determine whether any ceiling tiles or drywall have sustained damage. After he assesses the situation, the restoration technician will give the homeowner the best remediation option to make the damage disappear. By acting quickly, the homeowner can prevent expensive repairs in the future. SERVPRO® of Corpus Christi East is always ready to help the residents of New Orleans and the city's surrounding communities solve their water damage problems.

Candle Alternatives that Aren’t a Downgrade!

1/25/2021 (Permalink)

Candles are a great way to light up, decorate, and make your home smell like fresh leaves, a beach vacation, or sitting by the campfire. However, According to the NFPA, from 2014-2018, there were an estimated 7,610 house fires that were started by candles per year that caused an annual average of 81 deaths, 677 injuries, and $278 million in property damage. Save your Metairie home, and use these candle alternatives instead!

Flame-less candles

For those who just want the aesthetic of a candle and no scent, flame-less candles are a great option! They are typically battery-operated and give the same flame-like feature as real candles.

Wax warmer

Wax warmers are a great alternative because you can get that amazing scent that comes from real candles without the hazard. Warmers are typically either battery or outlet operated to melt the wax.

Diffuser

Calling all of our essential oil fans, this one is for you! With hundreds of combinations to try, diffusers are a great option for the whole house.

Fairy lights

Although they have no scent, fairy lights are a great way to light up and make a room feel cozy! Most fairy lights also come in with a standard plug or are battery operated.

Stick diffusers

The most low maintenance option is a stick diffuser. Put your scent in the vase and let the sticks do the work.

Room spray

Another great option with endless scents is a room spray. You can buy pre-made ones, or make your own for that signature scent for your home!

If you still plan to opt for a candle, be sure to trim the wick before each use to minimize sparking, place the candle where it can’t fall or be knocked over, and always blow out the candle anytime you leave the room or plan to leave the home.

When It Rains, It Pours...

1/22/2021 (Permalink)

When most people think about water damage they think of record-breaking floods, washer machines, and pipes busting in their homes. What they don’t think of is ONE inch of rain. Yes, I said it correctly ONE INCH. One inch of rainfall doesn’t sound like it can do much harm, but when one inch of rain falls on a roof without gutters it allows nearly 2000 gallons of water to soak into the ground around your home's foundation. Gutters are the key to help protect your home against water damage. Gutters collect the rain rolling down your roof and divert it away from your home, and prevent flooding from happening. Another reason gutters benefit your home is by protecting your soil from eroding. When you have faulty gutters it causes the water to wash away the soil and leave the foundation of your home vulnerable and unprotected.

Things to Keep a Close Eye On:

  • Debris Build Up: This can lead to pools of water forming on your roof and eventually leaking through your ceiling and into your home. Use a pressure washer or leaf blower to clean them out quarterly
  • Storm Damage: After a rain, wind, or hail storm it is important to inspect your gutters for cracks or breaks. If damage has been caused, you can fill the holes with gutter caulk.
  • Old Gutters: Older gutters are more susceptible to damage or contain open seams. Make quarterly routine checks for repairs.

For any water damage repairs needed, call the professionals at SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East!

Quick Tips for Storm Safety with SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East

1/19/2021 (Permalink)

Cooler weather in Corpus Christi is a great time to enjoy the great outdoors, but when sudden storms pop up, staying safe is of paramount importance. Thunderstorms may come and go quickly, but while they are in the area, they can cause flash flooding and a concerning amount of damage.

While the safest place to be during a storm is at home, if a sudden storm pops up when you are away, here are some practical tips for safety.

Practical Tips for Staying Safe From Sudden Storms

Know your options for shelter. When you are made aware of a severe weather scenario and are safely at home, remaining there is the best thing you can do so you can wait out the storm. However, this is a luxury that will not always be present. If you are caught out in a storm, you can shelter in your car as long as you can pull over safely and cut off your engine. Remember to park your vehicle on high ground when possible.

Practice electrical safety. A lightning strike can hurt a structure in many ways, but the most common way is via a power surge. As the lightning travels through the home’s electrical system, the wires will become overwhelmed with charge and transfer that to anything plugged into an outlet. If you can, go through the area you are in and unplug everything before a storm. In general, it is best to also have surge protectors throughout your home and office.

Avoid direct contact with concrete. Concrete structures are so sturdy in part because of how they are built. As concrete is poured around metal, it creates a great structure—but also causes a concern if there is lightning nearby. The metal in concrete can disperse electricity if the building is struck by lightning, so avoid touching these surfaces directly if possible.

Stay indoors for at least 30 minutes. If you are out enjoying the day when a storm rolls in, make sure you are not rushing back out too soon and putting yourself in danger. Lightning strikes can travel tremendous distances, causing officials to urge people to stay inside for at least half an hour after the last clap of thunder.

If your home sustains damage due to a storm, you can count on us to help. Contact SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East to learn more about our storm restoration process.

  • Pet food and extra water

Steps before a hurricane

  • Full tank of gas
  • Reinforce your garage doors
  • Unclog or clear all outdoor drains, rain gutters, and downspouts.

Steps during a hurricane

  • Turn off propane tanks
  • Keep curtains and blinds closed

Fire Damage

6/24/2020 (Permalink)

Cabinet with soot damage.

SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East understands a fire can be a traumatic experience.  Whether the damage is minor or major, there is still clean-up to be done. Smoke leaves soot residue, and depending on the surface, restoration may involve dry cleaning and/or wet cleaning of ceilings, walls, floors, and contents.  Methods of cleaning also depend on the type of smoke produced by the fire. Unfortunately, not all soot residues are the same, and depending on the materials that burned, the soot left behind may be powdery or leave particles that can be easily smeared. You might be able to see some of those particles in the form of "smoke webs", which look similar to spider webs but will easily smear if you wipe them off.  Different cleaning methods are used to remove the residues left behind, and our technicians are trained to recognize the procedures needed to clean up your home.  Please call us if you have a fire in your home regardless of the size we are always here to help. Call SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East at 361-985-6444 and let us help you through the clean-up process.

July 4th is a great time to spend time with family and friends, but it’s important to remember the hazards associated with firework safety. According to the National Safety Council (NSC), fireworks are best viewed in a public display conducted by a professional. Fireworks may be legal in some areas, however, the NSC strongly suggest leaving fireworks to trained individuals. It’s noted that over 50 percent of incidents are more likely to happen to children and adults under the age of 20 years old. Consider these helpful tips when handling fireworks should you choose to do so.

  • Light one firework at a time.
  • Keep water handy.
  • Keep fireworks out of children’s reach.
  • Pets are safer indoors during firework displays.

Fire safety is important and fireworks can potentially lead to serious injuries or property damage. SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East wants you to have a safe 4th of July.

For more information regarding firework safety visit the National Safety Councils website https://www.nsc.org

Mold Damage

6/3/2020 (Permalink)

Water damage due to water heater leak

Have you ever been told that all mold can be removed?  Unfortunately, that is far from the truth.  It's impossible to remove all mold from a home or business, as mold spores are both indoors and outdoors. Mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. In the State of Texas, the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) regulates businesses that test for mold, or perform mold cleanup (remediation). A licensed mold assessment consultant evaluates whether mold growth is present and to what extent. A mold remediation contractor such as SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East performs the mold cleanup following a protocol written by the consultant. Therefore, to prevent conflicts of interest, the rules prohibit a license from conducting both mold assessment and mold remediation on the same project. Trust our highly IICRC Certified technicians and let them make it "Like it never even happened."

For more information about State rules please visit their website https://tdlr.texas.gov

Do you have an Emergency Ready Profile?

5/5/2020 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East

Hurricane season is only a few weeks away, and it's time to start thinking if your business is ready. The best way to reduce business interruption following a disaster is to plan for it NOW.

Preparation is the key to making it through any size disaster, whether it's a small water leak, a large fire, or a hurricane.  No one ever plans on a disaster, but pre-planning gives you the peace of mind that you are ready for whatever happens.  Knowing what to do and what to expect in advance is the key to timely mitigation and can help minimize how water and fire damage can affect your business.

By developing a SERVPRO Emergency Ready Profile (ERP) for your business, you minimize business interruption by having an immediate plan of action.  It's a guide designed for your business to help you get back into your building following a disaster.  It serves as a quick reference of important building and contact information, such as where water or electrical shut-offs are-or your emergency contacts.  Having a quick reference for what to do, how to do it, and who to call provides solutions in advance of an emergency so that during the emergency you are "Ready for whatever happens."

This assessment has no cost to you and contains only the critical information you need in the event of an emergency.  The ERP has all your important information electronically and can access it 24/7 on a desktop or app on your phone. We will also provide a hard copy for your records.

Call us today at (361)985-6444 to get started on your free profile!

Water Damage

4/22/2020 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East

Have you ever looked at a wall and said, “It looks dry” or “It feels dry”? Oftentimes a structure that has been affected by water intrusion doesn’t dry quickly when we rely on mother nature. Here at SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East, we use the science behind the process of drying a structure. When materials are wet, moisture will naturally move to drier air at the surface of the material, but only if the air is drier.  Unfortunately, the Coastal Bend area has higher humidity than other areas which can factor in the process. We have the monitoring and drying equipment to help speed up the drying process before it leads to further damage such as mold or wood rot. Feel free to call our office at (361)985-6444 for any questions.

Hurricane Season 2020

4/20/2020 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East

Hurricane season is right around the corner, and SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East wants to help you be better informed for this upcoming season. Hurricane hazards can include tropical depressions, tropical storms and of course hurricanes. These hazards can bring destructive tornadoes, winds and even rip currents and high surf.  Here are 5 lists of things to know. Please follow the link for more information.  weather.gov/safety/hurricane-plan

  1. Storm surge is a large amount of water generated by a storm’s wind and is one of the leading causes of hurricane-related deaths in the USA. These surges can cause a massive amount of destruction along the coast and can travel miles inland.
  2. Flooding from the heavy rain is the second cause of deaths from tropical cyclones. This can potentially be destructive due to the number of days the rain persists after the storm has passed.
  3. Winds from a hurricane can be destructive due to signs and any outdoor furniture or materials left outside.
  4. Tornadoes can accompany hurricanes making landfall. These tornadoes typically occur in rain bands well away from the center of the storm.
  5. These waves contain rip currents and can cause damage to structures along the coastline.

Stay safe this hurricane season.

This Is Our Storm

SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East

Unfortunately, these times are comparable to a storm disaster, but this is a storm the entire world is experiencing at once. This deadly pandemic has reminded us that hurricanes or other storms all have a common element that can ultimately help guide us in how to respond to the chaos around our life.  Like our city leaders and other officials, they prepare for the upcoming hurricane season, and have taken guidance and noticed what other hard-hit cities are doing to prepare for possible cases of the virus. COVID-19 is like a storm disrupting our way of living. However, that doesn’t mean we can’t be prepared. According to cdc.gov here are some helpful tips below.

  • There is currently no vaccine to prevent coronavirus disease in 2019.
  • The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus.
  • The virus is thought to spread mainly from person-to-person.
  • Between people who are in close contact with one another (within about 6 feet).
  • Through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs, sneezes or talks.
  • These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs.
  • Some recent studies have suggested the COVID-19 may be spread by people who are not showing symptoms.
  • Consider whether you can work from home
  • Wash hands for at least 20 seconds
  • Stay home if you’re sick
  • Cover coughs and sneezes
  • Wear a facemask if you are sick
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces

Stay safe and healthy from SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East.

Water Damage due to Fire Extinguisher Dust

12/30/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East

Unfortunately, SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East is far too familiar with the outcome of a house fire so we can't stress how important it is to be prepared for a nightmare scenario. Fires are nothing we want to plan for, however, planning ahead could be a matter of saving your life or sentimental possessions. Having a fire extinguisher in proper areas in your home could mean putting out a fire faster and preventing it from escalating to severe property damage. For helpful placements of a fire extinguisher, consider these rooms:

  • Bedrooms
  • Patio
  • Laundry room
  • Garage or workshop area
  • At least one fire extinguisher on each floor of the home

Christmas Tree Safety

12/17/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East

Let’s be fire smart as we enter the holiday season. Tis the Season to be jolly, but let’s also be cautious of the fire dangers with purchasing a real Christmas Tree. Did you know an average of 160 homes had house fires due to Christmas trees resulting in about $10 million dollars in property damage annually?  Please follow these helpful tips from NFPA about Christmas Tree Safety.

Picking the tree

  • Choose a tree with fresh, green needles that do not fall off when touched.

Placing the tree

  • Before placing the tree in the stand, cut 2” from the base of the trunk.
  • Make sure the tree is at least three feet away from any heat source, like fireplaces, radiators, candles, heat vents or lights.
  • Make sure the tree is not blocking an exit.
  • Add water to the tree stand. Be sure to add water daily

Lighting the tree

  • Use lights that have the label of a recognized testing laboratory. Some lights are only for indoor or outdoor use.
  • Replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections. Read manufacturer’s instructions for number of light strands to connect.
  • Never use lit candles to decorate the tree.
  • Always turn off Christmas tree lights before leaving home or going to bed.

Frying Fires

11/26/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East wants to wish you a happy and safe Thanksgiving!

Let your Thanksgiving be full of family and giving thanks with lots of good fried turkey, rather than be a horror thanksgiving story. According to the NFPA frying, a turkey causes an average of 60 injuries and 5 deaths and nearly 15 million dollars of property damage each year. Please consider these tips provided by the United States Department of Agriculture to prevent any tragedy this Thanksgiving.

  • Don’t buy your turkey too early
  • If your turkey is fresh: keep in the refrigerator and make sure to cook within 1-2 days.
  • If you buy your turkey frozen: it will take 4-5 lbs per day to thaw in the refrigerator; for 12 lbs it will take 2.5 to 3 days in the refrigerator to thaw, then cook the turkey within 1-2 days.
  • Smaller turkeys are better for frying
  • Don’t fry a turkey larger than 12 lbs
  • If you don’t have time to thaw frozen turkey you can use a quick-thaw method of submerging the bagged turkey in COLD tap water.

Please remember that the turkey must be completely thawed to be safely fried. When working with large amounts of hot oil, select a cooking vessel large enough to completely submerge the turkey without it spilling over. The oil should cover the turkey by 1 to 2 inches. Select a safe location outdoors for deep fat frying a turkey. Heat the cooking oil to 350°F. Very slowly and carefully lower the turkey into the hot oil. Monitor the temperature of the oil with a thermometer during cooking. Never leave the hot oil unattended. Allow approximately 3 to 5 minutes of cook time per pound. When reaching approximate time needed, check to see if the turkey is safely cooked by removing the turkey from the oil, draining the oil from the cavity and with a food thermometer, check the internal temperature of the bird. DO NOT test the temperature while the turkey is submerged in oil. The turkey is safely cooked when the turkey reaches a minimum internal temperature of 165°F in the innermost part of the thigh and wing and the thickest part of the breast. If the turkey has not reached 165°F in all three locations, then return it to the hot oil for additional cooking. After dinner, the safest way to keep your dinner fresh is to not leave out food for longer than 2 hours and refrigerate up to 3-4 days or freeze your food for longer keeping. SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East wants to wish you a happy and safe holiday.

Disasters are Unpredictable

8/28/2019 (Permalink)

Flooding in the garage due to a storm.

SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East understands that disasters are unpredictable.  As we all know hurricane season can be very stressful especially when there are tropical storms brewing. However, we want to help relieve some of the stress with a few helpful tips. It's important to protect your home ahead of time so that you can limit the damage. One way is to purchase hurricane shutters or have plywood cutouts for all your windows. Another important tip is to make sure you secure your outdoor items, this can prevent any items such as potted plants, and lawn chairs to cause damage to your property due to high winds. If you are evacuating a storm, and are leaving a vehicle behind, it's important to park your vehicle on higher ground. It only takes two feet of water to carry a vehicle away.  Another important tip is to record or video all your belongings. This could potentially be a helpful way to provide information to your insurance company if a disaster should strike your property. Let's hope South Texas doesn't have another Harvey, but if we do let's be better prepared for tomorrow.

Flood cut

Did you know that the storm surge and flooding from a hurricane can cause the most damage to properties?  When your home or business is damaged by rising water, the drywall and other building materials affected by that contaminated floodwater need to be removed.  It's common practice to remove all the drywall and insulation that is wet, usually two foot up from the floor.  When you hear a company or your insurance adjuster, recommending a two-foot flood cut - this is what they are referring to.  Of course, if the floodwater was higher, anything contaminated needs to be removed.  Our technicians are trained and have the equipment to know what materials need to be removed, and then what it will take to dry the wood framing exposed by those cuts.  We are at the peak of hurricane season, so your friends at SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East are always here to help.

Is it really dry?

7/1/2019 (Permalink)

Water damage to the cabinet but it looked dry.

Have you ever heard a comment such as "it looks" or "it feels dry"?  Unfortunately, a structure that has been affected by water damage doesn't often dry quickly. When you have wet materials, the moisture will naturally move to drier air located at the surface of the material. This will only happen if the air is actually drier. SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East understands the science behind the process of drying out your home or business. If left untreated, you are likely to encounter mold or wood rot. Along with our highly trained technicians, SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East has the monitoring and drying equipment to speed up the drying process. We will determine a drying plan for the job, and manage the drying system to bring your property back to "Like it never even happened."

Firework Safety

6/28/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East

Fourth of July is a great time to celebrate with family and friends, but unfortunately, this time of year also brings the hazards associated with fireworks.

  • Keep fireworks out of children’s reach.
  • Pets are safer indoors during firework displays.
  • Don’t throw fireworks or hold them in your hand.
  • Keep water handy
  • Light one firework at a time.

Fire safety is important and fireworks can potentially lead to serious injuries or property damage. SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East wants you to have a safe 4th of July.

For more information regarding firework safety visit the National Safety Councils website https://www.nsc.org

Mold Facts

6/27/2019 (Permalink)

Mold due to leak behind the toilet.

Have you ever been advised that all mold can be removed?  Unfortunately, that is far from the truth.  It's impossible to remove all mold from a home or business, mold spore are both indoors and outdoors. Mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Consider these helpful mold facts below:

  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold areas
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, door, or AC/ heating systems. They even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or pets.
  • Mold spores are present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants. If you sustain a water damage in your home or business, the faster you dry it out, the less chance you have for mold growth.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Higher humidity areas have a greater increase in mold growth. Consider keeping indoor humidity below 45% to reduce the chance of mold growth.

Certificate of Mold Damage Remediation

9/28/2018 (Permalink)

IICRC Official Logo.

When a mold remediation project has been properly completed per the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation rules, the Mold Remediation Contractor will issue the home or building owner a Certificate of Mold Damage Remediation.  This certificate is signed by the Mold Remediation Contractor certifying that they have removed the mold growth as directed in the Mold Remediation Protocol.  This certificate is also signed by the Mold Assessment Consultant certifying that the project has been properly remediated and that the underlying cause has been corrected.  Only those contractors licensed by the State of Texas can provide this certificate.

Having this certificate is an advantage for the home or building owner.  If you are trying to obtain insurance or the property, it will show your insurance company that the property has been properly maintained.  If you are trying to sell the property, the law requires that you provide this certificate to the potential buyer.

What is Mold Remediation?

9/19/2018 (Permalink)

Mold containment occurs so that any mold in the air can be contained in a small area.

Mold Remediation is the clean up of mold growth on any structural materials, or even on your contents.  It may include removing the drywall, flooring, or other materials where the damage is seen.  It also includes thoroughly cleaning all surfaces by both vacuuming with a vacuum equipped with a HEPA filter and also wet wiping all surfaces with a disinfectant.  If the mold growth has impacted the structural framing, we may have to sand those areas to remove the visible growth.  In extreme situations, we may discover that the wood framing has severe wood rot.  In those situations, it may become necessary to actually remove and replace the rotten wood.  One last step in the mold remediation process is to work with the homeowner to make sure the underlying source of the problem has been corrected.

We cannot begin mold remediation without a Mold Remediation Protocol written by a Texas licensed Mold Assessment Consultant.  We are required to follow the protocol and have a written work plan that lines out specifically what steps we are to take with the remediation.

SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East is a Texas licensed Mold Remediation Company, and we have 2 licensed Mold Remediation Contractors on staff.

Handling Grease Fires

9/17/2018 (Permalink)

A grease fire can lead to a total loss in the kitchen.

A grease fire happens when the cooking oil becomes too hot. When the oil heats up, the oil starts to boil and then eventually it’ll start smoking then catch on fire. Animal fats will start to smoke around 375*F and vegetable oils have a smoking point of 450*F. Whenever you’re heating oil for any reason, make sure you stay in the kitchen. Always keep a lid and clip a thermometer to the side so you always know the temperature of the oil.

If the worst happens and a grease fire does form, make sure to do the following:

  • Turn the Heat Off - Don't try to move the pot. You might accidentally splash yourself or your kitchen with burning oil. And that would be bad.
  • Cover the Pot with a Metal Lid - Fire cannot exist in the absence of oxygen. With the lid on (and the heat off), the fire should quickly consume all the oxygen and put itself out. Use a metal lid since glass will shatter.
  • Spray the Pot with a Fire Extinguisher - This is your last resort, as fire extinguishers will contaminate your kitchen. Still, it's better than the alternative if the fire is getting out of control.
  • Get Out and Call 911 - If the fire does break out of control, don't try to be a hero. Get out and find a phone to call 911.

Now that we understand how grease fires start and what to do to prevent them, hopefully you’ll never be in a situation where you have to use this information. If it unfortunately happens, do the steps to ease the fire and call the cleaning experts at SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East right away! We will work nonstop to make sure it looks “Like it never even happened.”

Storm Update for the Month of August

8/22/2018 (Permalink)

The 2018 Hurricane Season outlook has been updated w/ lower numbers predicted, due to developing El Nino, cooler Atlantic water temps & several other factors. Regardless, you should still have your hurricane plans in place as we approach the peak of the season. It only takes one!

In a separate analysis, atmospheric scientists at Colorado State University forecast an “average” season with 13 named storms, six becoming hurricanes. They find that the Atlantic has cooled a bit in the last two months, making it less conducive to fueling strong storms.

It is very difficult to predict when a hurricane may occur, however it isn’t difficult to prepare for a disaster such as a hurricane. SERVPRO offers literature through blogs and brochures that deal with hurricane preparedness. We also provide an Emergency Readiness Profile for businesses to have a plan if a disaster ever occurs.

Storm Readiness

6/24/2018 (Permalink)

Storms have the potential to destroy anything in its path.

2017 was a tough year when it came to storms. Most of Texas felt the danger that storms possess and can cause. Storm season, in Texas is June through November with August and September being the worst months for storms. For 2018, NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center is forecasting a 75-percent chance that the hurricane season will be near- or above-normal.  The best ways to stay safe is to be informed. Today there are many outlets for news whether its: news channels, weather apps, social media or radio. It’s always best to listen to your local news because the city government can release information faster that way.

If a local government is giving orders to evacuate make sure to follow the best you can. Plan accordingly for the trip and make sure all priority belongings are with you.  If you are in an area that does not have evacuation orders, be sure you have your supplies ready.  Visit www.ready.gov to get information on how to prepare for a hurricane.  Your home and belongings can be replaced, however you can’t. It is best to stay alert and be willing to relocate if necessary.

After the storm has passed, SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East is here to help – give us a call at 361-985-6444.

Restoring Fire and Smoke Damage

6/21/2018 (Permalink)

For most homeowners, a fire can be a traumatic experience.  Whether the damage is minor or major, there is still clean-up to be done.  Smoke leaves soot residue, and depending on the surface, restoration may involve dry cleaning and/or wet cleaning of ceilings, walls, floors and contents.  Methods of cleaning also depend on the type of smoke produced by the fire.  Not all soot residues are the same.  Depending on the materials that burned, the soot left behind may be powdery, or leave particles that can be easily smeared.  You might be able to see some of those particles in the form of "smoke webs", which look similar to spider webs, but will easily smear if you wipe them off.  Different cleaning methods are used to remove the residues left behind, and our technicians are trained to recognize the procedures needed to clean up your home.  If you have a fire in your home - no matter the size - call SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East and let us help you through the clean-up process.

Are you ready?

6/21/2018 (Permalink)

Hurricane season is fast approaching, and it's time to start thinking if your Corpus Christi business is ready.

Basically, it's a guide designed for your business to help you get back into your building following a disaster.  It serves as a quick reference of important building and contact information, such as where water or electrical shut-offs are-or your emergency contacts.  Having a quick reference of what to do, how to do it and who to call provides solutions in advance of an emergency so that during the emergency you are "Ready for whatever happens."

This assessment is not cost to you, and contains only the critical information you need in the event of an emergency.  Plus you have 24/7 access to it at any time through a desktop computer, or an app on your phone or tablet.

Category 3 Water Damage

6/19/2018 (Permalink)

Sewage/flood overflow is a dangerous type of Category 3 water damage.

Category 3 Water Damage

There are many water sources that contribute to your water damage, and they are classified as Category 1 (Clean Water), Category 2 (Gray Water), and Category 3 (Black Water). Out of the three categories, category 3 is the most unsanitary type of water damage.

Flood water is one source of unsanitary water in a home or business.  This is something to be aware of as we enter hurricane season.  But the most common source of category 3 water is a sewer back up.  Per IICRC guidelines, any porous materials that come in contact with the contaminated water should be removed and disposed.  This includes carpet, carpet pad, and drywall.

Our water technicians are all IICRC certified and know what to do, and the steps to take, in cleaning up category 3 water.  We know how stressful water damage can be, and they are there to help guide you through any water situation that you encounter.

Remember, the sooner you mitigate your water damage, the less chance you have of major repairs.  Give us a call at 361-985-6444 – we’re here to help!

Does Your Home Have a Mold Problem?

5/7/2018 (Permalink)

Mold can spread on surfaces in as little at 48 hours

Mold spores are everywhere, both indoors and out.  This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business.  Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level.  Some restoration businesses advertise "mold removal" and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy.  Consider the following mold facts:

* Mold spores are present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.

* Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems.  They even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or pet.

* Mold spores thrive on moisture.  Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water.  These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.  If you sustain a water damage in your home or business, the faster you dry it out, the less chance you have for mold growth.

* Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed.  Otherwise, the mold may return.

* Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.

Even higher than normal indoor humidity can support mold growth.  Keep indoor humidity below 45%.

In the State of Texas, the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) regulates businesses that test for mold, or perform mold cleanup (remediation).  A licensed Mold Assessment Consultant evaluates whether mold growth is present and to what extent.  A Mold Remediation Contractor performs the mold cleanup following a protocol written by the consultant.  SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East is a licensed Mold Remediation Company, and has two licensed Mold Remediation Contractors on staff.  To prevent conflicts of interest, the Rules prohibit a licensee from conducting both mold assessment and mold remediation on the same project.

For more information regarding the State's rules and regulations for mold assessment and remediation, please visit their website at https://tdlr.texas.gov

It's Spring Cleaning Time!

4/26/2018 (Permalink)

Time to clean!

When you think of spring cleaning, the obvious comes to mind.  Dusting, cleaning floors, reducing clutter.  But what about your air conditioning ducts?  Summer will soon be upon us and your air conditioner will be running full time.  Over time, dust and contaminants can build up in your ductwork.  Do you have indoor pets?  Pet hair and dander can also accumulate in your ductwork over time.  Are there smokers in the house?  Nicotine can build up in the ducts which affects the air quality and freshness of the area.  Dirty ducts can circulate odors and that irritating dust that keeps accumulating in your home or office.  Cleaning your air ducts, along with regularly changing your filters, will improve your air quality and freshen up your home.  Call us at 361-985-6444 for more information, or to schedule an air duct cleaning appointment.

"It Looks Dry"

4/4/2018 (Permalink)

We often hear comments such as "it looks dry" or "it feels dry", from home owners or property managers that have had water damage to their property.  But often times, a structure that has been affected by water intrusion does not dry out quickly when relying on Mother Nature.  Did you know that there is an actual science behind the process of drying a structure?  When materials are wet, moisture will naturally move to drier air at the surface of the material - but only if the air is - actually drier.  As we all know, here along the coast, higher humidity is a fact of life.  Some may think that a couple of fans and the air conditioner will take care of it - but how will you know?  That's where SERVPRO comes in.  We have the monitoring and drying equipment to speed up the drying process before it leads to further damage, such as mold or wood rot.  All of our technicians are trained in the science of drying, and follow IICRC standards when drying a structure.  With the right equipment, and experienced employees, why risk trying to let it dry on its own.  Call the professionals at SERVPRO of Corpus Christi East.
